.

Yes.

.

You will need an Accessory Decoder and point motor. These do not have to be Hornby branded products. The Hornby products are rather limited to the four port R8247 Accessory Decoder and solenoid type point motors either R8243 (surface mount) OR R8014 (under-board mount).

.

The Hornby products have not been updated to take advantage of the latest DCC features and functions for some considerable time. The R8247 has to be configured on the Elite programming track output. Most other branded products use 'self learning' configuration where the decoder is configured on the main track output of the Elite. 'Self Learning' is far more user friendly.

.

Some non Hornby branded products combine the point motor and the DCC Accessory Decoder in the same physical package.

.

The options open to you are endless and I recommend some thorough research before committing to any one particular system. Whichever one you choose, they are all compatible with the Elite.

Many users prefer to use switches to operate their points instead of DCC, just like we would with a dc (analogue) layout.  Operating points using the DCC controller can be slow, awkward and cumbersome.  Some controllers make it easier than others but it's still easier to throw a switch, IMHO.

I would only consider DCC operation if I was using, or thinking of using computer control, where DCC points operation is necessary.

Hi Mick

Chris has given you some links, one being DCC Concepts. I use their Cobalt Digital iP point motors, which have a built-in decoder. You programme them very much like a loco by wiring them to your elite and then follow the instructions - giving each point a number. You can take the power for your point motor from your DCC bus cable. You can also operate them by toggle switch (on-off-on/ sprung to centre), it is much quicker to operate by toggle switch than go into "Accessories" punch in the number etc. Mine are wired for both - you can also operate Dapol Signals from the point motor. The choice is yours, but do some sums before buying. BB
