The son of Triangman
Does anyone here protect their decoders from an overload? I use a solder in axial in line quick blow fuse rated a little below the max current rating the decoder can draw, the fuse will blow before the decoder does every time if there is an issue. 96RAF
I have blown decoders at times, but usually by overloading the function outputs or shorting the sound amp. The motor output being self protecting. I have some quick-blow fuses that I bought for a dimmable standard lamp that I may try. Rob
The son of Triangman
Worth a go Rob, I find if you use ones that fast/quick blow at less than the decoder max current it helps. It might be worth protecting the function outputs as well.

BagEndJct
(Sorry! I have edited the original post). Not directly relevant but, having blown a number of decoders in my early days of DCC, I now always, always turn off the power to the track when placing locos or re-railing them after derailments. (Hope I'm not stating the obvious here?). To facilitate this, to save my having to scramble around behind the board to turn off power, I use a spare remote controlled power socket into which my Elink power supply is plugged.
