1:72nd Scale North American Mitchell Mk.II .... D-Day Aircraft

It's a worthwhile investment Jeff! I spent over 4 decades using a hairy stick and was stuck in my old ways, maybe too scared to take the next step? But tips from this forum and help when I joined a modelling club about 3 yrs ago (now sadly folded), I now use a host of new methods and airbrushing and I think it has taken my finished product to the next level !?

And all is revealed!

I'm pretty pleased with the outcome, only a few small areas to touch up. I still need to improve my masking skills but with practice ...........?

Next will be a Klear cote then the decals plus a load of stensils!

The tail was fitted earlier with only a smear of filler at the joint.

The bomb aimed is ready and oh is that a bomb site?

Whoops late night Typo error. The last line should read - the bomb aimer is ready and Oh is the a bomb sight?.

And looks like my late night photos were lacking some proper lighting - sorry!

Jeff: using the international unit of pints of beer you can get a perfectly decent airbrush for 3 pints. 95% of what I post is done with a £10-£12 pound chinese double action airbrush which I chuck away and replace as it stops performing. My compressor cost 5x that but is ten year old. I've had a variety of more expensive brushes (up to £150) but found they're so fine they clog easily and can need more cleaning time than spraying time.

The build is coming on really well. Have you seen the new series of Catch 22? 3 real B25s (later models) plus dakota Harvard ju 52 etc. Yossarians has the two canopy panels above the pilots eyeline in green perspex. I haven't a clue if it's accurate or not but I mixed 1 drop Vallejo US dark green with 5 drops Vallejo gloss varnish and painted mine the same. Looks really good.

@ Peter s

Yes I started spraying with a second hand compressor for £40 so you can start on the cheap and I was recommended to start with Vallejo Model Air paints as they are pre-mixed and ready to go!

And thanks the build is almost finished so should be ready for the final upload of pictures by Monday? And I have Catch22 recorded to watch when I have more time, but maybe the sun visor screens were painted or added when 'in theatre'?

Thanks Dark Earth.

And yes it's an impressive kit, up to Airfix's recent high standards with the now normal un-used parts etc to suggest other versions to be adapted later. I know a B-25B is due for release soon but I think a B-25G would be possible too??

Before starting this kit I had followed PMM's build thread and 1 of the small issued he highlighted with the kit was that only the US Norden bomb sight is included with the part sprue's. Although its a big step forward to include a detailed bomb sight, its not exactly accurate for an RAF version of the Mitchell. Initially I had stated I wasn't that bothered, but as I progressed with my build the issue started to eat away at me so I went onto the internet, the library at my finger tips!

The Mk.XIV Bomb Sight and Bomb Control Panel was found.

So with some scrap plastic from my spare pares bins and a touch with the paint brush produced the following results ........

/media/tinymce_upload/4e156f451ab2d22140f71df4a090b34d.jpg

Maybe not the best but behind the perspex very little can be seen and I think its better than fitting a Norden bombsight which would clearly be wrong?

I admire your skill T2B! I'm no expert but that looks awesome and once behind the canopy I'm sure it'll be very convincing. And your figure painting is great too - he even has a surly looking countenance (as you would sitting at the pointy end of a D-Day aircraft). 😎

Thanks Jeff.

I forgot to mention that aswell as making the bomb sight from scrap plastic and spare parts I painted the panel at the very front of the nose section, port side to replicate the bomb control panel and a couple of added EZ Line cables between the two.

The final touches have been completed such as the canopy and window glazing, turrets and EZ Line ariels.

Its not easy to see the bomb bay and get enough light for the camera but here we go?

I for one think you have made a very good job of both the build and the description of it. I was quite taken with the photo of the model with the box behind making it look like a formation in 3D with bombs dropping on the box looking as if they came from the model. Very well done.

Hi T2B

What a wonderful build, and an excellent write-up  as well. This could be the de-facto go-to for anyone contemplating building this kit. And Ditto to Dominics comments above, those final photos are excellent, maybe Airfix will contact you to use your shots for promotion. Again well; really enjoyed this adventure.

Keep them coming. Remember we do this for fun                       John h Pom

Thanks Dominic and John, I'm blushing with such high praise!

And I don't want to give away all my secrets but if you keep watching I've got something planned in the next couple of days involving falling bombs???

  • 3 months later...

Here are the latest display pictures I promised a couple of months ago.

Yes I hinted at the end of the main build that I had something in mind in relation to the aircraft dropping a stick of bombs. The bombs as I mentioned earlier were in my spares box from a scrapped Hampden and were repainted during the build. It just took me too long to actually hang the aircraft from the ceiling but now the Mitchell is in flight on a bombing run!

And before the final couple of shots, a close up of the bomb bay from directly underneath.

Thanks Ratch and Dark Earth for your positive comments.

I do try something a little different when I can, I actually did the falling bombs on my Hampden build about 15 years ago but when that aircraft was decommissioned I saved the bombs in my spares box and they came out to receive a fresh coat of paint for this project!
