ivatt class question

From one of the wiki pages... and this is how I understand the usage of these locos... not having one in my collection:

"The LMS Ivatt Class 4 2-6-0 is a class of steam locomotive primarily designed for medium freight work but also widely used on secondary passenger services. The London Midland and Scottish Railway (LMS) built 162 of this type between 1947 and 1952, but only three were built by the LMS before nationalisation in 1948. Designed by H.G. Ivatt, they were classified 4F by the LMS and 4MT by BR. In BR days they were used extensively across the system, being prevalent on the London Midland region and to a lesser extent elsewhere, notably on the Midland and Great Northern Joint Railway, an East Anglian line that had previously been joint owned by the LMS and LNER, where they became the dominant locomotive type. They were also used for a short period on the Somerset and Dorset Joint Railway, but were quickly transferred elsewhere, never to return, because of poor steaming on the line's long and steep gradients – this was before modifications were made to the design which improved steaming notably."

Expansive info may follow but it's a start.

Short answer - Both.

H G Ivatt stepped up to the position of CME of the LMS in 1946 after C. Fairburn died.

His first design was the 2MT 2-6-0 a lightweight locomotive for secondary passenger and goods duties. 20 were built for the LMS and BR built a further 108 the last one appeared in 1953. R. Riddles who followed him as CME of BR then built 65 more to a very similar design. The LMS version were 6400 to 6419 and 46420 to 46527, the Riddles type were 78000 to 78064.

Ivatt also built a tank engine version also 2MT but now a 2-6-2T. The first ten appeared in LMS days and were numbered 1200 to 1209, The following 120 built by BR werre numbered 41210 to 41329 the last appearing in 1952. Again BR built 30 more, 84000 to 84029 , between 1953 and 1957. There were detail differences between the Ivatt and Riddles versions but generally speaking they were identical. They were used for branch lines and for light duties including suburban work in cities.

Ivatt's next design was the 4MT 2-6-0 a much more powerful type and heavier than his 2MT. These were used for secondary duties working passenger and goods trains 162 were built between 1947 and 1953. The first 11 were LMS 3000 to 3010, the rest were BR 43011 to 43161. They were a particularly ugly locomotive with a very high running plate well above the top of the driving wheels, and looked unfinished.  Riddles produced his own 4MT 2-6-0 76000 to 76114 but it was a much nicer looking locomotive with a more substantial running plate which sloped down at the front to connect to the buffer beam.

Ivatt also built two more Stanier type Pacifics modified and improved, 46256 and 46257. He also produced some revised versions of Stanier's Black 5 4-6-0 including some with rotary valve gear. His final exercise were two 1600hp Co-Co diesel electric locomotives 10000 and 10001.
