Hornby select sound function

I have a new Hornby select controller software version 1.5. I'm operating a TTS flying Scotsman.  But I find the order in which I need to press function and number to activate a sound confusing, from the point of view, it's not simple. For example, I activate sound ok, so let's say I want a whistle. I trie pressing function and number 4 together Doesn't work. So then I select number 4, then function, and I get either an off or on indicaction in the lcd screen. There seems to be a lot of key presses. What am I doing wrong. Can someone provide me with the correct key presses please.

Press required function Number then Function button, which toggles function-sound on and shows this on screen. Repeat to toggle sound off.

The big problem with the Select is there is no persistent on screen indication that a function has been selected, so you either need a good memory or a tick list. The Elite at least has an indicator dot on screen when a function is on.
