Poppadoom
Hi all, I'm looking to fit a dcc decoder to my son's old locos after upgrading his controller. one model in particular is worrying me slightly, as there doesn't look to be much room inside, t's the L6360 pacer set. There are two powered units in this set, so I also wondered whether I can run both motors from one dcc chip, or would the current draw be too much to do this? Does anyone have any advice/experience of doing this to this model?
96RAF
Although not Lima these are likely to be very similar inside. See herehttps://www.hornby.com/uk-en/hornby-dcc/decoder-installation-guides/r2611-class-142-railbus-pacer/ and herehttp://s374444733.websitehome.co.uk/class-142sound/index.htm It is unlikely that a single decoder would have the oomph to run both motors, so two decoders is the better method. Chrissaf
Subject to motors used, the current drawn by just one of the motors might possibly exceed the current available from a Hornby decoder net alone two motors. Personally, I would perform a 'stall test' on DC first to see the maximum current draw, then select a suitable decoder [possibly a non Hornby one] that meets the measured current draw requirement. As Rob says, one decoder per motor. Also subject to the decoder, the decoder might use the motor 'Back EMF' as part of its control methodology. Having two motors in parallel is likely to confuse a decoder if it sees the 'Back EMFs' of two motors conflicting with each other.
