Digital Controller flashing E5

E5 is the Select error code ES [Emergency Stop]. It occurs when excess current is being drawn by the track. Typically a 'Short Circuit'. If it is not clearing, then the problem is still present on the track (barring the Select actually being faulty). Disconnect your track from the output of the controller. If the E5 error code clears then look for a 'short circuit' on your layout, by reconnecting the controller then removing all rolling stock from the track to discount the track itself, then replace the rolling stock one piece at a time back onto the track until the E5 error returns. These diagnostic tests will hone in on what is causing the 'short circuit' fault for further investigation. If disconnecting the track doesn't clear the E5 error, then that indicates that the controller is faulty.

EDIT: Forget what is written above. Rob is correct . E5 is Emergency Stop. I was getting mixed up with EO [Emergency Off] which is the 'short circuit' error code and replaces the previous earlier firmware OL [Over Load] error code.

Constantly flashing E5 could indicate that the 'Stop' button on the Select has got stuck in the pressed position internally on the button pads on the PCB.

You could also follow the Select manual instructions regarding peforming a 'factory reset' of the Select.

Have been using it for many years.

When there is a problem everything flashes. E 5

Press red button and it returns to normal.

Unfotunately it does not respond and keeps flashing.

Any ideas...a solution?

There are two scenarios:

ES which as Chris says is Emergency Stop. This stops all locos, but leaves the track live. Once you repower it all locos resume as they were.

EO which is Emergency Off. This stops all locos as it kills all track power. Once you repower it you have to restart all locos manually.

ES suggests a rolling stock problem rather than the track itself.
