Is my TTS R8114 recoverable?

I have purchased a Black 5 with TTS, but the only thing the chip will do is respond to commands on address 3. I cannot read the existing setting, and I cannot write any setting, plus there is no sound.

So I could still use it to simply run the loco on address 3, but that's not good. Can it be re-flashed, or do I stick it in the bin?

Given you may have just purchased it the obvious thing to do is invoke the TTS warranty by calling Hornby Customer Care and let them know about your problem.

Sometimes a decoder will respond if programmed in Reg Mode (register mode - google it to find the list of 8 registers)

You don't say whether you bought this Black 5 new or secondhand. I know it is a long shot but if you bought it second hand check to see if someone has added a Stay Alive circuit to it. Seems very weird, I have had other makes not accept the reset command but TTS is usually pretty reliable. Sometimes though, you have to do it twice.
