dcc for class 91

The standard Hornby R8249 8-pin decoder will match the factory-fitted socket in your loco if it has one (you do not specify which class 91 loco you have).

If your loco does not have a decoder socket, it would be advisable to connect one in to the loco wiring as that will make any need to change the decoder in the future easier than soldering the decoder direct to the loco's wiring. Fine soldering skills would be needed to make the socket connections. X9084 is a suitable Hornby socket.

If you are thinking of a sound decoder, you will have to look elsewhere because Hornby do not cover any electric prototypes within their TTS sound decoder range.

If you are talking about the latest Hornby Class 91 then you ned a 21-pin decoder with 6-functions. There should be a note of addendum in the box explaining (badly) which function covers which lighting arrangement.

Your controller also needs to be able to operate the higher number functions, i.e. 21 and above.

This loco has been discussed on several forums, as Hornby has yet to launch its own 21-pin decoder (announced in 2022 products launch).

@96RAF

Thank you for that. I had not realised Hornby had released a model fitterd with a 21-pin socket so far ahead of their decoder becoming available, the likes of HST power cars with 21-pin sockets being scheduled for Autumn release at the earliest.
