There is no gauge difference with Europe in terms of track gauge. In terms of loading gauge however... There is a difference. So the standard loading gauge in the UK is 9ft, the standard berne loading gauge is 10ft6 so a waggon can be wider in europe than it is in the UK. The Great central railway (the original HS2) was built to berne loading gauge to be able to run trains through to Europe.
