96RAF
A while ago someone was asking about cranes and I posted a couple of images from Whitwell and Reepham Railway. They have moved their other crane (Grafton) into better view so I grabbed these shots.
81F
Now that is a very interesting match truck, Quite a doable build using a set of Hornby Gresly Bogies
96RAF
Could it have been an old carriage repurposed for the carry.
Moccasin
I think it was, yes. I thought that too when I saw it. Edited February 17 by Moccasin

Moccasin
To be honest, my first assumption was partly due to not looking at the wooden planks closely enough. Initially I thought they were the remains of the carriage body, before realising they’re just planks attached by simple brackets. Still possibly it’s a former carriage or wagon whose bodywork was beyond repair. Edited February 17 by Moccasin
LesXRN
Talking about cranes. Here are some photo's of the Longsite crane and support carriage and van from the late 60's early 70's. The chap in the photo's is my Dad. He worked the crane after leaving the footplate when Trafford Park shed closed.
Moccasin
I love historical photos like that. Did your father ever have the Hornby model of the crane? It looks fairly similar to the one your father worked on.
LesXRN
Funny you should ask that Moccasin. My Dad didn't, but I do. You can just see it on my old layout. It will be on my new one when it's built.

Although it is not my era or railway, I know that some researchers in the future will thank their lucky stars. These personal records are part of the details of railway history that they will discover. Much like John Backhouse, who drew the consist on opening day of the Stockton and Darlington Railway, your crane images may hold the key. So thank you, in advance, from those future researchers, to you. Bee
threelink
Is it my lousy eyesight or is the crane on bogies (a la Dapol/Airfix kit) as opposed to a rigid chassis (a la Hornby model)?
LesXRN
I'm not sure which picture you're refering to Threelink. You'll have to quote it.
threelink
Sorry, L. The first one, the Longsite crane with raised jib.
LesXRN
Bit hard to tell but it does look like bogies. I don't have any other photo's of it unfortunately.
threelink
Thanks, L. That's a fascination. I did not know that BR had any bogie cranes but I just happen to have a spare Hornby body and a spare Airfix chassis...
96RAF
A bit of info about the Grafton Crane I posted images of. The guy at Whitwell and Reepham Railway told me this. '...built in 1952 and worked as a permanent way crane near Doncaster. 10t lift, self-propelled. Went to Colne valley in the 1980's. Its privately owned. The runner is a now one of a kind ex-GNR full brake converted for crane use. I am working on a document for all stock on site that will be able to be used by staff for such questions.' They intend to restore it. Interesting about the runner.
