Wingnut66
I have just fitted a Hornby 4 function decoder to a loco which on DCC runs fine. I occasionally need to use this loco on a DC track but despite the decoder instructions saying it's possible to use on DC, it is very jerky in one direction if it goes at all. Other times it will take off with no control from the controller. Can anyone suggest a fix please.
morairamike
Welcome to the forum. A few things to check first. 1) was the loco DCC ready before you converted it? 2) Is the decoder inserted in the socket the right way round? 3) Is it inserted too far into the socket so that one of the legs is touching the loco parts under the socket. 4) did it/does it run OK on DC with a blanking plug fitted (if it was DCC ready you will have had to remove that) 5) does your DCC controller allow the changing and reading of CVs. If so check CV29 is set to allow DC running
poliss
2) Only things that will happen if you do that is the loco won't run the way you expected and the lights won't work. (This is because what you are actually doing in effect is reversing the wires to the motor and disconnecting the wires to the lights.) 3) That sounds more likely. Try refitting the decoder making sure the pins don't protrude through the bottom of the socket. 5) If CV29 wasn't set for DC running the loco wouldn't move at all. Tried in two different locos on 3 different tracks.
morairamike
Hopefully your answer to Q3 is NO, if it is in too far it will short on the loco parts. recheck. There ahve been reports on other forums that some DCC sockets have shorts on them between the pins, which doesn't matter on DC but on DCC is a problem. Need to check out that point too. 2e0dtoeric
Wingnut DID say the loco works fine on DCC, so it isn't a bad connection or short. It has to be the decoder that doesn't like direct volts. What decoder model number and make is it?
Flashbang
Hi The main issue with DCC running on dc is the type of dc controller being used. If it has any sort of feedback or pulsed output it will quite often cause the loco to either run the wrong way or take off like a scaled cat and is totally uncontrollable. You can often get around this by only using a better quality of decoder typically one that supports Asymmetric braking.
Graskie
What scaled cat are you talking about, Flash? 00, N etc?
Flashbang
Hee he Yes, thats a 4mm to the foot 1/76th OO scaled cat without a doubt! Scalded was of course what I typed (I'm sure)!!!! :-)
2e0dtoeric
Don't know about scalded cats, but there's a vid somewhere of a plastic duck on a layout, (enough to make you think we're all quackers!)
