New Display shelfs

Recommended Posts

After an ongoing discussion in another thread on how to display the larger bomber aircraft in a limited space, Dominic asked me to keep him informed on what i did to find solutions for it as space was limited by steep eves of the roof so i started this to keep things in one place and not take other threads in a different direction.

I've gone for the kallax storage unit turned on its side as it will fit under the eves of the roof without coming too far into the room.

layed this way its a 146.5 cm long 76.5 cm high and 39 cm deep, each square is 33.5 x 33.5 cm 39 cm deep.

You can get an insert to fit into the square that has a glass shelf and door (i will get these at a later date)  which was another point for me getting this.

as you can see it has also given me some storage for my stash (just loosely shoved in for now) these were in boxes out of the way and i had forgotten about some of the kits i had.

there is a bit of room on top but the height is restricted by the eves of the roof but should still be able to get built kits with wheels down on ok.

as for the squares I've done a few trial's with things to see what i might be able to fit

Tornado 1:48 scale fits in at an angle

lancaster 1:72 scale will fit this way but I'm hoping once built it will go at a slight angle with the wings on.

D-Day air assault diorama base fits nicely in the space.

had a trip to ikea and had a look at the shelfs to fit in the kallax shelving, i could have got just a glass shelf that fitted in but i would have had to mess about measuring and drilling my own holes to fit this and get it level, i decided to get the insert that you build up this comes with holes already drilled for the shelf but the main reason i went for this is that it has a back to it and comes with a glass door so should help to keep the dust down.

the screws that hold the hinges in place also screw into the shelving holding it all in place so things cant fall out of the back unlike they could with just a shelf, two screws go into the opposite side to help secure it all, the glass door can be put on to open from either side.

a quick test to see if the bigger aircraft will fit clearly they wont fit this way the wingspan is too big to close the door.

it will fit nicely like this and the door will close.

lack of space to have a tall unit pushed me down this route and im not disappointed with getting this at all, it fits great with the option of laying it on its side like i had to it works well in the low space giving me a decent area on top for displaying as well as the four top squares i will use the bottom squares for storing some of my stash, im looking to put a calex light strip i picked up from tesco into it which can turn different colours giving a different aspect to things whilst brightening up a dull area.

ike do a unit with slightly smaller squares (i cant remember its name) but im really glad i didn't buy that one.

I am also looking for storage for the larger models. I'm looking at these as well. Where should I put those B-29s?

I suppose you could slope the "ground" for display, so instead of having the fit the wingtips across the 'flat diagonal' from bottom-left-rear to bottom-right-front corner, they'd instead fit from top-left-rear to bottom-right-front corners, a 'sloping diagonal'.

There still might not be enough room though. Lancaster wingspan was apparently 102 feet, so the 'flat diagonal' of this shelf must be 1'5" if the 1/72 Lanc just fits. A B-29's wingspan was 141 feet, so you'd need nearly two feet to fit one of those in. My rusty Pythagoras tells me you would need the height of the bay to be 1'4" in order to have a B-29-sized, top-left-rear to bottom-right-front corner distance of two feet.

It's hard to be sure from the photos, but I'm guessing the space inside the cabinet is not as high as that.

the depth of the inner unit is 36cm with the door closed height from top to shelf is 16cm height from shelf to bottom is 17.5cm.

you could use the shelf unit without the back on if you still wanted the door on the front to give you more depth and enabling the wing to stick out of the back and even more if you arnt flush up to the wall like mine.

you could just get a glass shelf and put it to the height that suits you or put more than one shelf in each square there is plenty of options with this unit that's why i like it so much.

got the rest of the shelfs decided to use the lower half for storing my kits

I've also put in the lighting i got the calex multi colour led strip 5 meter length run it across the top then into each shelf unit and then back across behind the shelfs so this would also light up behind the unit, you can get smaller lengths if you wanted to just put it into the shelfs

i drilled holes into the back of the shelf unit to thread the light strip through.

this one helps show the lighting around the unit helping to brighten up a dull space with it been under the roof eves

I'm really happy with them Randall, getting the shelf unit with the door on is keeping a lot of the dust out and putting some lights in has made a big difference the pictures don't really show how nice and how good it looks with them on, building the Lancaster came to a stop so its been kept safe in there so that was another win for the unit and i also know it will fit in when its finished but anything a bit bigger might be a struggle to get in, but time will tell when i build a different aircraft but i can always put it on top of the unit if they are a bit too big.

the Lancaster is finished and sits on the shelf nicely anything a little bit bigger will be a squeeze to fit in though but there is still a little bit of room around the Lancaster
