Typhoon Ib - 1/48

Recommended Posts

Posted (edited)

I started this in November’23, my first 1/48 kit in many years. It is the Italeri D-Day edition.
I enjoyed it up to the point where the D-Day stripes were to be added. These were slightly larger than necessary, took forever to release from the backing paper, and split numerous times. I persevered and with a mixture of setting solution, varnish, and white paint, the result was half decent and ok from a distance.
It’s not quite finished in these pictures as you can see the yellow on the wing leading edge needs to be painted as those transfers were not up to the job either.
Note that it was straight from the box, no extras.
Here are the pix :-

This photo attempts to show the problem with the stripes. Because I’ve zoomed in, it also shows my poor finishing. Anyway, you can see the breaks mainly in the white sections. The application of liberal quantities of white paint eliminated their visibility from a distance.

The breakages tended to occur at or near the leading edge of the wing and Microsol Blue didn’t help.
Still, when sitting on its undercarriage, the problem won’t be seen.
Above the wing, the cannon blisters caused the breakages.

Nice recovery of the stripes, I say they are the hardest decals to do and I suspect they get harder as they get bigger.

You could be right. I have never tried them in 1/48. I will say that the other markings were much easier to apply although the Type B upper wing roundels had their moments. Perhaps it was an age thing.
