Rog RJ
The basic Hornby R8249 is what I'd recommend as the Select can't alter the CV settings of other decoders to get the best out of them.

Fishmanoz
Just a heads up for when you go to install a chip in your 0-4-0 - the Hornby instructions on this site a quite lengthy because they assume the motor is mounted with its connections facing down when in fact later 0-4-0s have them facing up. If so, there is no need to remove the motor, just rearrange the connections to go via the the chip (decoder red and black to pickups and decoder orange and grey to the motor). I've previously posted a full set of the necessary steps so do a search for them on here.
Gregd99
I had a problem when I removed a motor from an 0-4-0. After replacing something was not quite right and the worm drive would slip:-( Added to that I used an 8215 :-( decoder which was not a very good idea.
