VSOExpress
Apologies for this old chestnut but there is so much confusion about the correct oil to use for locomotives can anyone advise on this with a brand name etc thanks
walkingthedog
Definitely not 3 in 1 or WD40. There are several oils and greases specifically for model railways. May I suggest going onto some of the model railway retail sites and see what they sell. Sewing machine oil is a good choice and not as expensive as some of the specialist brands. The son of Triangman
As has been said sewing machne oil is a good choice, recommended by the likes of Tri-ang and Hornby of old. There are plenty of specialist oils on the market. Also as has been aaid don't use 3 in 1 or WD40, these synthetic lubricatnts can damage plastics in models and paintwork, they gunk up motors and gearing, soften and/or make the plastic of drive gears brittle too so are best avoided. The son of Triangman
We use a special oil that is as close as you can get to the old Tri-ang lubricant and a white lithium based bearing grease that is the same as the grease used by the facotry when models are new. There are loads of specialist variations out there suitable for the job.
SkyCube
Hi VSOExpress, I use this stuff: http://www.gaugemaster.com/item_details.asp?code=FM6599&r=
The son of Triangman
It's good stuff. Hmmm tricky, I carnt advertise due to forum rules, but will anyone mind if I say I know someone who sells something v.similar but cheaper, I don't think breaks forum rules. I find it diffcult to answer without advertising so have to word my response very carefully. Note I haven't used the business name and have tried to answer without doing wrong. Bulleidboy
I thought we were not supposed to name another product if it was in competition with something that Hornby produced. They do not produce - to my knowledge - a range of lubricants for their locos.I use Labelle products - they sell a kit with oils, grease and fine applicators. It is available from several of the major suppliers and ebay.
walkingthedog
I guess M-S was referring to something he sells. As it was 7 years ago he probably doesn't any more. I agree with your choice Barry.
