2014 - Time for something Scottish

It is time for our model railway manufacturers to provide something with a Scottish flavour!!! There are many Scottish prototypes just waiting to be modelled; how about a Caley Bogie for a start!!

On a serious note 2014 is the Centenary of the Great

War and how appropriate it would be if Hornby produced one of the J36 0-6-0's which saw service in France!!

Unfortunately I would think that Hornby producing anything to do with the Great War Centenary, would end up on the same shelf as the leftovers from the 2012 Olympics. If the J36 was in the same format as used at the time in the UK, then it may sell, but

not in great numbers.

Hi BB

The J36 was the standard North British 0-6-0 (built from late 1880s, I think). A number were requisitioned for War service and on return names were painted on the splashers, appropriate to the conflict eg Maude, French. These names were

carried on the locos until they were scrapped in the late 50s, early to mid 60s. The last steam locos to be allocated to Scotland were of this type.

There is a major shortage of pre-grouping Scottish locos in any livery, as is the case with NER locos.

Hornby could make it in LNER/BR black, apply the name and not even mention the Great War. They won't though - easier to produce more GWR types (although most have been produced at some time or other) and more A4s, A3s and Bulleid pacifics.
