LCDR
Frequently a thread emerges asking how to improve the haulage power especially of 4-4-0s and singles. I have recently purchased a motorised coach chassis, intended to motorise a 2H DEMU, but then Kernow brought it out RTR so it was thrown up spare. It is also suitable to motorise a locomotive hauled Mark 1, so I am considering turning it into a booster carriage to assist weak locomotives to haul greater loads. Some many years ago Kitmaster made a 'motorised box van' to push their unmotorised kit locomotives when made up, and also a motor bogie to go inside one of their carriage kits for the same purpose. Is this something that could be of help to others? At present Hornby do not make anything like this but a small manufacturer who makes replicas of motor luggage vans makes this motorised chassis instead. All you then need is a suitable carriage body. walkingthedog
What a great idea LC. I remember the Kitmaster box van. I would have thought with the motorised bogies that are available it would be any easy job to make something.
dawath
I've got one of those Kitmaster wagons, dunno about using to assist locos, but it does a good job pushing a track cleaning wagon round.
