  1. Latest to the collection was the blue streamlined Coronation Queen Elizabeth and the B team's H1 La France. My Queen Liz was suffering the missing handrails saga, but easily got replacements from the store, other than that very happy with it. La France is a beauty, I'm very much enjoying the offerings that are coming out these days from pre-grouping. I'd be looking at Hornby's Stepney but the Dapol/RoS/NRM Terrier is looking mighty nice.

Just look at what I recently managed to fabricate from a small piece of one of my gold bars! I hope I've gauged it right.

I used this for the first time the other evening and it's great. It beats the old cold common steel ruler, being much quicker to use and saving eye strain. Its round edges tapering inwards make it extremely easy to work it into the inside of wheels and, for some reason, it is a real pleasure to use. You can gently ease wheels wider apart (which seems to be the more usual adjustment required) or, presumably, press any wheels which happen to be too wide apart onto it.

I could do with one of those, but what's it called and where can I get one?

  3. Lol, you know what there was something in my head as I typed that making me doubt what I was saying! I couldn't for the life of me remember which side of the atlantic called it what! For some reason at the time funnel sounded best in my head! Smokey tube at the front.

Yes, I think a sugar cube at the front would be fine Rob, but the larger high bass speakers would most likely need to go in the tender.

  4. Yes hornby use loksound. Their sound files are different to all you will be able to buy though. There should be enough room inside the loco body for the decoder (8 pin socket is at the front of the chassis, near the funnel), but there is very little room for a speaker in the loco too. There is, as said already, plenty of room in the tender, but that means running the speaker  wires from the decoder to the tender. Not impossible, but would take a little skill and patience. There was an excellent article by Paul Chetter in Hornby magazine a couple of years ago doing just that (and some more). I can't remember which edition it was and my copy is packed away for a house move so I can't dig it out, but maybe someone else could help here.

There is a range of 'sugar cube' speakers which are remarkably small with great sounds for the size which may be possible to squeeze into the loco body.

Loksound decoders come with a speaker, but you may want to switch it for a better quality one, just make sure whatever you use has the right ohms rating for the decoder.

    Good luck.
