  1. Most of the reports regarding the Bulleid Pacifics are definitely the idler gear which is the problem. I have put both types on back order with Lendons, but don’t have much hope they will get any. The gears ,when they were available, came as a set to include the idler gear and drive gear. I don’t think Hornby would ever contemplate having spares available for a model over 20 years old. It would be nice if manufacturers thought a known fault should be catered for, but that just isn’t the case. Thanks everyone
  2. I have a lovely example of the above (Clan Line), and am aware that these locos can suffer from a split idler gear. Although mine runs perfectly I am concerned that the idler gear will fail, trouble is, there are no replacements available, and no way of knowing if they ever will be. I have pre ordered both types as I don’t know which type of gear I have, Does this weakness apply to every Merchant Navy/West Country etc model produced? Do these sort of spares eventually become available? I really love this loco, and don’t want it to become unusable. Thanks
  3. Thanks for your suggestions, the express models kit has been out of stock for a considerable time (and still is). I think the cost is a bit prohibitive for what I want, ie 2 white LEDs, just wanted any advice regarding size of LEDs etc. Never mind, thanks everyone for responding.
  4. It’s GBRF livery, assume it’s quite late. It has what I thought were headlights (just mouldings)
  5. Hello, happy New Year! I have the above loco, which is fitted with an 8 pin decoder, and fancy putting in some lights. As far as I know it will only have white LEDs either end, has anyone done such an update? I assume I will have to take wires fron the 8 pin socket, possibly with resistors in series. I am not sure what type/size of LEDs to get as the space between the body front and cab detail is quite limited. Any tips?
  6. 5Dublo2, thought I would let you know I followed your recommendation and fitted the Ruby decoder as described (Christmas present). The improvement in the Terrier is quite amazing, the slow running is very smooth and the motor chatter has disappeared. Thanks again
  7. The 17mm ones are a Christmas gift from my daughter, can't try them until the 25th! However, if they don't work as planned then mixing them is a good idea thanks
  8. M Mathews, thanks very much, I haven't got any 2nd radius curves,so should be fine. Very kind of you to take the time
  9. Amazon listed them as 19mm,even though there isn't that size,Hornby's description is the same for both sizes, so thanks for this forum. Pictures would be great, thank you
  10. Thanks, I thought more people would have them as they were very popular. Won't be the end of the world, but thought they would look quite good.
  11. Getting the 17mm size as small Christmas gift, anyone used these for coaches? My tightest curves are over radius 3 (flexible track), I have a small rake of Hornby Collett coaches plus some Mk 1's etc. Hornby's description is the same for both sizes regarding suitability, anyone used these without buffer lock? Cheers
  12. Just to say thanks to those who replied and to let you know the Terrier is now running with it's horrible Hornby decoder. I managed to not blow up all of the 6 pin decoders, and needed one of them for my Hattons P class (don't ask !). If the Terrier maintains it's unusual behaviour of running, I may get a decent decoder for it in the future. As the Hornby decoder does not have adjustable start voltage, I think it's set to low so the motor chatters a bit until it gets going, not too much, but it's there. All in all, my worst eBay bargain🤔
  13. Oh dear, even more unseen problems with my Terrier, the collector plate that has plungers going to the base plate has a broken (or missing) spring on one side. As the spring is internal I can't see what could have broken it. I have now had to get a new decoder, new motor and now this collector. All of them have been faulty, the motor would stall and need a spin of the worm to get going again. Just a query, I can't remove the base plate completely, it seems to pivot on the rear brake rodding (after removing the screws!). Does it come off? I'll get there in the end😳
