  1. Thanks for info on oiler, Ken. Looks very similar to the Gaugemaster item, which I have just received. I haven't unpacked it from blister pack, so hope the needle is a similar small bore to that you are showing.

Hopefully, spare room will be cleared in a couple of weeks and I can really get to grips with this. All you postings are so valuable as advice for a newbie to the steamer world!

    Cheers

  2. Good evening,

thanks, Ken, for kind offer, which I would be grateful to accept. I will contact Rob with relevant email address etc.

    Thanks once again

    Rod

Mod note - contact details passed from Rod to Ken.

  3. Ken, you are a veritable mine of information regarding these little marvels, thanks for the latest detail. I haven't yet had the chance to test the loco, or even remove the body to carry out the schedule of maintenance you wrote up some weeks ago. (I have in fact printed it out to guide me along!) I haven't tried for the screw either, so may have to beg your assistance in this regard. Anyway, thanks once again

  4. Thanks for the info on the link, Ken, and apologies for not responding sooner.

I will see if the Hornby spares dept. has one. If no luck there, then I will report back.

Thanks also for the advice re. WD40, nice to know it's not all bad news with that product!.

Look forward to seeing the images of the oiling unit you describe. I never thought I would see a recommendation for Castrol GTX in relation to a OO gauge loco, but sounds as though it is just the right viscosity for this particular range of locos. A trip to Halfords seems to be in order.

  5. Good morning all,

thanks again to Ken & Rob for the much appreciated advice. A couple of questions ....how is the connector between loco and tender linked? I have the draw-bar flapping around loosely at present. I assume that it would have had a pin or similar joining the 2 components, but there is nothing in the packaging that might have dropped off.

Also, you mentioned a new variant of WD-40, I haven't much experience with these, and note there are a couple of different types available. Is one more suited to our purposes?

    Any help appreciated

  6. Thank you Ken, and to Rob also. I have copied and pasted Ken's recommendations. As Rob suggests, this could be the basis for a 'How To Service a Live Steam Loco' sticky, Ken is full of knowledge on the live steam range. Always enjoyed his videos showing the conversions he has done.

Will let you know how things progress

    Once again, thanks

  7. Hi to all,

have been away from the forum for a while (protracted house move etc) but glad to see some familiar names.

Have just bought 'Mallard' live steam set, and and realise that this is much more than track laying and dcc control, more like the real thing. I was amazed at the weight of the package, the poor delivery lady put it down and ran!! Anyway, as a newbie on this, wanted to ask Ken and Rob about the cleaning of the underside of the loco, When I took the loco out of the package, noticed there were oil marks on the packaging. The underside is shiny with oil, so can I use IPA to clean this off - that's before I even start laying track and connecting the very impressive control system! Any advice would be gratefully received

    Many thanks

  8. Received mine on Tuesday, very pleased with the look of it although not yet removed it from it's clamshell.  Did find a piece on the carpet after I removed trhe loco from the box, so will now have to check from whence it came!  Also will look at the body moulding more closely just to make sure everything is OK.

Love the way Hornby have used this great model as a donation initiative, great stuff

  9. Bachmann have produced the London Underground 'S' class stock  as a special for that organisation's shop in Covent Garden.  I have the 4 coach set, and have pre-ordered the EFE set (which I had, unmotorised and stupidly sold  the set some years ago).  Found the 'spud' motorised bogie I bought for it just recently!.

I think it would be great if Hornby were to offer something similar in the urban transport set-up

  10. Thank you to Rob for the link to the North Norfolk Railway, the class 20 looks a handsome beast in the ‘Met’ livery.  Also to WTD for the shot showing a pair hauling the new ‘S’ stock to Neasden.  Saw these two a few times when using the Met to go into London, both ‘at rest’ in Neasden and also in mid-haul..  Great stuff, as always from this great forum.  Thanks to all concerned.

  11. Crikey, that is a cracker, Jim, will look very impressive.  I keep wondering if I should by the ROD loco, it won’t go with my ‘Lord Rodney’, but at my advanced years I wonder whether I should worry about that lol.

The Beyer Garrett is imposing, but so many small (even minuscule!) parts, that I have had to put the bits that fell off when first unpacking the loco in the ‘accessories’ bag, there is no way my shaking hands can reinstate them!
