I worked in the motor industry for years either rewinding or replaceing depending on the cost and to be frank and to the point Hornby are talking rubbish, These motors cost pennies to buy this comes down to bad management and greed in some back office there is an idiot who thinks they will make more profit by not offering spares and the end user will just buy a new loco as this unfortunatly is the way companies now think just look at most products, But this is where Hornby will kill it.s own customer base as they are now charging extortanate prices for inferior products any loco with a silver cased motor will end up needing a new one as these motors are inferior compared to the black cased ones and tend to be one off runs, Whereas the black cased motors in general ar actually the same motor in constant production the difference being the shafts and gears there are some motors that are physically different but not many if you look closely. The bottom line here is Hornby could easily stick to using 5-6 motors and keep plenty of spares but whatever bull they try to feed you they think it is more profitable using the current format.
