The OO Live Steam Club use IPA to clean the Roadshow tracks after each 2 day event we attend and it works well. We may well do an additional clean if it is a three day event and also use a 'felt pad' type cleaning wagon. This 'occasional' cleaning regime works well if it is only live steam locos that are running but if 12v (DC or DCC) locos are to run on the same track the advice would be to clean before each 12v running session. This would prevent the curent problems you are expeiencing and it will also be good for the live loco performance as well.
