  1. Hi everyone, Just managed to return to my original post - thanks you all for your replies and suggestions. Will be looking at these in greater detail to try to get the best way forward. I've got around 14 locomotives stretching back to the 1960s era and and I've just had them serviced, most of them are actually running very well - especially the diesel-types. I'm loathe to start again in today's very pricey railway world, especially as I've also got a working controller and about to test another double controller to see if it is operable. Probably more likely to invest in a proper loft stepped ladder (for my imaginary grandchildren -:) ) as I've already got a large-ish boarded track area (12ft x 6ft) up there. Have cleaned a small section of track using a rubber which has been relatively successful, but as others have previously mentioned it's the points which which seem to be causing problems. Any tips on cleaning points (carefully) much appreciated. I can't imagine any of the locomotives I have would be successful on the new track, especially the points. Will see how things go. Many thanks once again for your help, it really is much appreciated Pete
  2. Hope someone can help a novice here. Have a reasonable amount of old-style Hornby rails, points, etc. Would like some advice on how to clean the component parts - rails, fishplates, moving points section, etc. I have a number of working locomotives for DC operation and it's really just for two young grandsons rather than a sophisticated layout. So I'm not too keen on starting from scratch with new kit if I can salvage a lot of the stuff I already have. In addition, are the old-style rails still available? Presumably only through the second-hand market? Thanks
  3. Hi Al, thanks for the info, already looking at what's available from your recommendations. Much appreciated
  4. Hi, new lad here and could do with some advice. Want to resurrect old hornby train set from 40+ years ago purely for grandsons, but old R900 Controller no longer works. I have a really good number of old steam and electric locomotives and rolling stock from that era plus also the (steel?) track. I'm guessing I need to use one of the old-style DC controllers for single locomotive control? Are there any new / second-hand DC Controllers that you would recommend as a better bet than the R900 I previously had? Also, any pitfalls to look out for if buying second-hand? I'm just really looking to get trains running again rather than a sophisticated layout. Thanks, Pete
