  1. Hi all, I recently was making the Airfix MiG-17 using the 27002 Metalcote tin Polished Aluminium as the base colour. This was my first time using enamel paints as previously I had only used acrylics. I then had problems with applying an enamel wash for panel line details, as the white spirit I used to remove excess wash also stripped the enamel metalcote underneath. I was aware this would be a problem, if no acrylic layer was applied over the base. However I did apply two layers of Vallejo Satin varnish, and yet the white spirits still stripped through these layers. On my next model, also using the same 27002 enamel base coat, I used Humbrol acrylic spray varnish (satin) as a protective layer, and it worked fine, the metallic paint lost its sheen but the base layer did not come off with the white spirits. My question is, why did the vallejo varnish fail to protect the enamel base, but the Humbrol spray varnish succeed? Also, I have a bottle of Humbrol satin clear that I haven't had use for - would this work to protect an enamel layer from white spirits? Many thanks Max
  2. Hi all, I'm about to start making the 72nd scale Phantom FGR2 as a gift for my dad. I am unsure about the paints I should use for the exterior colour. I have got an additional decal sheet so I plan on making an all grey 29Sqn scheme, similar to the included Mount Pleasant flight scheme but with a different tail design. My question is about the paints I should use for this model. The extra decal sheet calls for just a standard tri-tone grey colour so I am going off the included grey scheme for paint numbers. It calls for using 165, 166 and 167 for the exterior. However I can only seem to get my hands on 167 in acrylic, 166 in enamel and 165 as a spray can which I would not feel confident with at all. I have also never used enamel paints before and I would ideally like to stick to acrylics just because I have had practice with them before but I am open minded if there is no other solution. I would like to know really if there is any way around using these three colours which I can't get my hands on. I've tried using a paint converter because I can easily get access to Vallejo Model Colour paints but the problem is the three humbrol colours are so similar the converter just tells me to use the same grey colour for all three humbrol shades. So my question really is, how neccessary are the three different shades? Would the model still look good using solely 167 RAF Barley grey? Or is there a way I can get all three shades in acrylic form? I do not have an airbrush either by the way. I hope this makes sense, thank you in advance for the help! 😀 Max

    Dominie Decals

Hi, I'm looking to buy the Vintage Classics HS125 Dominie T.1, but I'd like to paint it in the glossy black/white paint scheme from its later years at 55® squadron at RAF Cranwell. Are decals included for this scheme? Thanks Max
  4. Hi, I'm building the A03085A Hawk T.1 and I have seen there are some parts on sprue G (the sprue with the armament) and I have no idea what they are. There is no reference to them in the instructions. The parts are 25G and 26G. Thanks
