Thanks both for your advice. he already has an old hornby one that smokes but it’s in black and that isn’t Christmasy apparently! He uses that on his own layout. He runs the hm6000 with iPad so not DCC for the new hornby steam ones unfortunately! will have a look for one of the triang/hornby red ones as you suggest. Thanks again

Hi, my son and I are setting up at winter scene for under the Christmas tree with the R1248 Santa express. is there a way to add a steam generator to the engine so it steams and “looks proper” according to my 7 year old. thanks in advance Lee & Arthur

Nobody is doubting your knowledge @96RAF you have helped me many times. it’s the info out there for the public who don’t have your knowledge that’s the issue here

I preordered based on the wording and the video. luckily I checked here and spoke to the tech team as otherwise would have had an expensive paperweight and upset son when it got here and wouldn’t work.

Can discuss all day Language used, but the point remains it’s not clear. That can be seen by the comments on this thread. And whilst it maybe clear to someone with your knowledge of the hobby, it’s not for most, and luckily I was able to cancel the pre-order or would have had a almost £300 paperweight come autumn 2022.

It’s not clear, and the video release, as others have mentioned says it works out of the box. Which it clearly doesn’t as it doesn’t come with a DCC decoder even to work on DCC. Says link with a DCC sound decoder for the sound, doesn’t say needs it for the steam. Says if you want to add the sound. (Which I don’t) and the triang steam 040 works perfectly fine without DCC, I know it’s ancient, but there are other steam generators available without DCC, as you @96RAF have advised me of previously. So it could be much clearer.

update on this. I spoke to Hornby Technician today and they will only work on DCC. Little disappointed as could be made clearer on the website.

Hi, it’s not clear from the descriptions, but will the black 5 or prince of wales work on DC only? And still steam? Obviously they won’t have the sound but we have the HM6000 so will be close enough for my 5 year old. Thanks in advance

is it possible to fit a smoke generator to the hornby mallard? Or flying Scotsman? we just use DC. Is this do able?

That would be ideal ruffnut as the mallard works perfectly for him. Any ideas on the screw size? Detail?

Joe, I would love to have a model shop locally, although would cost me a fortune with my son, but the closest is like 75miles away. Thanks goingspare, sorry I don’t have the service sheets to hand. The set was purchased brand new and has only been used by us. I will try and unscrew the post and get in touch with customer service. I just thought it was supposed to be like that as that’s how it was new but now have the mallard it’s questionable. Thanks All

Yes there is a pin on the underside of the loco which goes through the tender, but it’s really tricky to get it in and put on the track, it also separates when going on any slight incline such as going onto turntable. So wanted to make it like the mallard (left)

Hi Not sure if this is best in here or the general discussion but here goes we have the hornby turntable, which runs of output 4 on the HM6010. is there a way that the polarity can be flipped? So that the turntable doesn’t have to do a full revolution to get to the previous bay. Ie be able to choose clockwise or anti clockwise ad hoc? can this be done in the app (I can’t see a setting but maybe there are) or would this need additional switches/wiring etc? thanks in advance

Hi, My son has had the flying Scotsman set R1255M for a while, the tender is loose from the engine, it’s tricky to get them connected, and stay connected when on the track, for example if goes on the turntable they disconnect. He got today for his the Mallard R3371, the tender for this is connected to the engine and is fixed with screws both ends, meaning he can put it on the track himself and it doesn’t disconnect. Is there any way that the Scotsman can be modified easily to be the same as the Mallard? Thanks

Thanks I’ve spoken to Express Models today. They said includes pick ups for the dummy car so hopefully will be fairly straight forward to fit

Thanks Steve, was hoping that would be able to just power from the track. Thanks Rob, dismantling etc is fine. Just checking with them regarding pickups for the non powered car.

Hi, we have just got the R3829, yellow submarine Eurostar. There are no lights on the leading units. How easy would this be to add headlights & tail lights to them? We use DC (HM-DC) Thanks in advance.

Got round to doing one of the loops with the foam. Little tricky to sort point motors but got it sorted. Much quieter now, especially the Dapol Pendolino which was particularly noisy also looks good. Thanks for all the advice. Will get around to the second loop during the week. Also my little assistant, ignore the helmet it’s his hard had for working 😂

We use the TrakMat, with a few extras, my son loves it. If we had the space though I would ‘do it proper’ and build the full layout.
