  1. Thanks Paul for your photos and insights! As many have said, those catalogue photos were quite inspirational. Perhaps someone will recreate them?
  2. Thanks BJT91. I wonder if Hornby have always outsourced this? Perhaps someone knows of the 70s company. Also, I’ve found others have been asking the same historical layout question. See links below. https://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/91592-whatever-happened-to-the-heros/ https://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/41622-the-hornby-catalogue-influence/
  3. Thanks all for your welcome, comments, tips and patience. I’ve found another photo, in “The Art of Hornby”, p76. Without the people you can clearly see the mainline disappearing into a ‘tunnel’ as per New Lad’s diagrams, meaning the layout is probably a diorama - although it could theoretically curve under the track above. I tried V4 of the track planning book and couldn’t find anything. Perhaps this pic might trigger a thought for others involved, eg Railway Modeller staff. Still chuckling about the ‘man with pipe’! Thanks, Andrew
  4. @96RAF Thanks. Is there any way of contacting him? Here’s the layout from the 1973 catalogue.
  5. Hi there Would anyone have details on the layouts in historical catalogues. I’m particularly interested in the layout near the front of the 1973 catalogue. It would be great to see more pictures and know who built them, construction techniques and so on. Thanks
