  1. My HSTs are the older models but in my experience they are fine on 2nd radius besides a little overhang. The bogies have a short wheelbase which works to their advantage, from what I've seen the more ridged larger CoCo diesels and more ridged steam engines are more likely to run into problems. Keep in mind most locomotives (especially Hornby) will specify a minimum reccomended radius in the tech spec.
  2. Agreed. YouTube is a very useful source of research, getting some knowledge from people who have been hands on with the products and also the potential to learn details I've not been able to find in documentation. I usually look up 2-3 different reviews if possible as it gives a better range of opinions imo. I also do tend to use YouTube for finding news and infomation on new products as I can have it playing in the background while doing other things.
  3. With regards to the HST set I wouldn't have been surprised seeing these products in 00 range with the pack containing a Railroad HST rather than the premium one which is sold without coaches. That said since TT models are new I would guess they are the same or very similar models. I don't know if there are any changes to the set model to help it meet the price point but if it is the same, I would probably be fustrated had I splashed out on the original pack. That said the pack is exactly what I want to see more of from Hornby as it does appear to offer a better value option. I would like to see them introduce this into 00 gauge sets like the Class 91s and the HSTs there. Regarding Hornbys TT range I happen to agree the range needs to be a lot larger for it to have any level of interest for me, theres just not enough variety in my opinion. I suppose Rome wasn't built in a day though.
  4. As an end user though I feel that shouldn't really be my concern. It was brought as a brand new unit so I'd expect all fixtures and fittings to be fine.
  5. Thank you for the replies. I have tried pressing the 0 button numerous times in the test mode, its tempramental, in fact at one point I got 2-3 working presses out of it in a row then nothing again for a few presses. It is a brand new unit so I'm not comfortable pulling it apart.
  6. Thank you for the fast response. It is a brand new elite, I tried running the self test and when it allowed me to test the buttons the other numbers were working perfectly but the 0 was rarely registering. Its a shame theres nothing to tone down the dials sensitivity, but I suppose it might become easier with practice.
  7. Hello, So I recently splashed out on a Hornby R8214 Elite controller. I would generally be quite happy with it but I'm finding it almost unusable since the global sensitivity on the dial controls seem to be rediculiously high. I am aware I can fine tune decoders so speeding up a loco can be quicker/slower, but I have found even just navigating menus I often turn the dial to where I want, and just the action of pressing down on the dial to select often registers as a turn as well. I'd like to think I have quite stable hands but no matter how I try to press the dial, it regularly registers a turn as well. Is there anything I can do to help with this? I even find when I'm programming decoders or trying to choose locos I end up selecting the wrong option because when I press the dial it registers a turn as well and sets the wrong setting. I suppose to add insult to injury the number pad seems to be the opposite and is not very sensitive at all. I got used to this on the Select controller but for some reason (while it does still work) the 0 in particular on my Elite is particularly opposed to registering when pressed. Any help would be appreciated.
  8. Tbh I never really thought much into how the stop works, but idk I also got a giant power switch thats easy to press as a backup. I'll do some more running and if it does it again I'll take a look at the CV19. Even if they do fix the glitch eventually its a bit of a nuisance. Seeing as its new I feel it should have warranty coverage. I'd rather keep it and hope a firmware update sorts it later down the line, but I also don't want to end up in a position where its still got a problem and I'm not covered anymore.
  9. Hello, I have a Class 55 Deltic that comes with the HM7000 sound decoder installed. I have the loco running on a Hornby Select DCC controller and It was happy days at first but twice now I've completely lost contact with the locomotive. The first time was before I paired it with the app and while other locos with traditional DCC decoders worked fine, this one was nowhere to be found on its address or on address 3 all of a sudden, and even the app couldn't find it. I ended up resetting the CV8 to get the controller to reconize it again and then the app was able to see it as well. The second time it went wrong was while running, the only settings I changed on the app was the volume, I left it in DCC controller and it had been fine for a number of short runs but today while running it just vanished from the controller, even hitting the Emergency Stop button which halted everything else on the tracks had no effect on this Deltic it just kept going. I booted up the all (which I havn't really used at all besides a quick look and adjusting the volume) and it wouldn't connect on there either. Again I reset CV8 with nothing else on the track and it looks like we're back to new condition again, its awake and responding with sound and movement on address 3 again. When it connected to the app it did an update, but the problem has occured before and after the update now. Not sure what to do really I like this loco a lot but I don't want to have to keep resetting it, and its a bit worrying to think it can just runaway and seemingly anytime with the Emergency Stop button not being able to halt it.
  10. Assuming the pickups and commutators clean and the brushes are in good condition you could check the springs are not pushed in too tightly, you can leave a small gap between the motor housing and the tab that holds them in place (just don't let them ping out or you'll never see them again) To be honest I've also had ringfield motors that take a fair whack of power to get going, is it still able to crawl if you slow it down once its in motion? Edit:Also I've found if you accidently over oil these it can end up back onto the commutator and put you back at square 1, might be worth a look.
  11. Should starter sets come with a few more extras in the box? I know Train Sets can be brought by people of all ages and experience but for the purpose of this suggestion, I am trying to think about ways of attracting people (particularly younger people) into the hobby. To me a big part of the appeal of running model trains is everything built around it, I like watching my locos dive in and out of tunnels, cross bridges, stop at platforms etc. Quite rightfully adding all that scenery to my layout is up to me, but for a new modeller who has just unboxed their first oval of track why not give them a hand? Not only will it make their first oval of track more interesting but it might help them develop the creativity and desire to keep building and adding to their set. I'm not suggesting any expensive extras are added, just some very basic props and structures that a new hobbyist can build to develop their skills and hopefully help create an interest in going further into the hobby. Here are some ideas which I would like to see added to the train sets, please feel free to add your own ideas below. 1) Card Platform or Footbridge kit. This will only be a very basic design to introduce the concept of card kits, if a person wanted to go further down this path purchasing a retail card kit would be an upgrade. 2)Card Tunnel Faces. As these are the face of the tunnel only they would come with a suggestions booklet to introduce new modellers to scenery building and some of the items they could use to build their tunnel. 3) 2-3 freestanding trees to setup around the layout, these may have to be plastic but can be of a lower quality than the retail versions as an introduction to placing trees/foliage and how they benefit a model railway scene. 4) Props, add a few cheap card props to add around the layout, even if these are 2D give a first time modeller the chance to stand a postbox by their level crossing or put a few people and a news stand on the platform, maybe setup a 2D signal at the end of their siding. To clarify I think these kits should be about as basic as they come, its more important that they are easy and could potentially liven up a basic set and give inspiration to go further and explore more of the hobby. As the intention with most of these items would be that a serious or developing modeller may choose to replace them eventually they should also be recyclable, hence the use of Card wherever possible.
  12. Thank you its working great now. Bit of a scary moment to kick off my DCC experience but at least I know for future and my Mallard is still ok.
  13. Yeah its that one, and since the picture I posted may not be working its looking rather charred which is why I concluded that may be to blame. I had heard in the past these may be a problem on DCC, but I kind of assumed that was more related to older converted locos. I will snip it off and do some more running with the body shell removed, if all goes well I'll load it up with a rake of coaches and do some further testing. Thank you.
  14. It is an older HST which I guess had the ringfield motor at some point but has had an attempt at being converted into a CD Motor. I brought it on the cheap as a bit of a project for me to restore, so I'm going to fit new lights and solder on a DCC socket. Given that I probably wouldn't be comfortable selling it on with all those changes I'll probably try wiring the dummy cars LEDs in reverse as that would work for me. Regarding cheaper decoders in the dummy car I was considering that but ended up picking up a load of decoders from Hattons sale, I think they may still be at the basic end since they are 8pin 2fn but I guess for a upgraded HST they should be enough in both ends since I understand the motor is function 0, then the forward/back lights with be 1 and 2? On the points I'm hoping it will not be an issue as I do not really have many short wheelbase locos that I'm going to use on the DCC layout. I do wonder if the HSTs default pickup configuration may be an issue, or the class 08 may have troubles. I am happy to work on those as improvement projects later though and if stay alive circuits fix those I may look into those. Thank you both for the advise, I do try to research but its an awful lot to take in so you've been very helpful in providing some clarity.
