Be interesting to know what 50s have you all got ordered? I've gone with the BR Blue with sound, Leviathan.

I really need a small logo headcode blue version, but as a stop gap until that’s available I preordered the large logo blue without sound.  I have a stockpile of sound decoders from the Hatton closing down sale so hopefully should be an easy job to fit sound to it. 🙂

  3. I used the discount to pick up a couple of blue and grey MK3s in anticipation of my HST set arriving later in the year. It’s a decent saving and buying two qualified for free shipping.  So much for my plan to reduce my railway spending for the summer!  The Class 50 and MK2 preorders are just around the corner too!

All this means Hornby need to make a deltic and quick 😁

I think there was a OO Deltic 3D print in the display case on the Hornby stand at Key Model World?  Perhaps they are developing cad for a TT version at the same time?

I wasn’t aware 50 and 37 shared the same bogie design, famously 55s had the uprated version of 37 bogie, I think it had extra webbing for 100mpg rated running and the 37 was rated at 90mph. At end of service many Deltics had their bogies swapped into 37’s , possibly even preserved Dektics are actually on 37 bogies.
All this means Hornby need to make a deltic and quick 😁

They are the same wheelbase etc. so the models should share mechanisms and ‘ironwork’?  The plastic side frames might need different step placements so those will presumably be a different moulding.

  6. I wonder if we might get a good spread of Class 37’s in the first batch?  There are five class 66 liveries (granted that’s a loco that doesn’t have the build differences between liveries that the class 37 will have).

Really feels like BR full blue should be making an appearance by the time that loco launches?  So blue and grey MK1s, full blue class 37, full blue class 50 and eventually full blue class 47?

So my wish list would be Class 37’s in Green split headcode with small yellow ends, and single headcode versions in Full Blue small logo, Scottish Highland large logo large yellow ends, and general Railfreight two tone grey/black with general freight logo.

I’d be day one purchase for any of those.

  7. I attended the show today, those Class 66’s looked fantastic in the flesh.  The J50 sample was beautiful too.  Seeing that full size Class 37 in BR green really underlines how good they look.  Really hoping for a green one in the initial batch.

  8. If it’s for lineside fencing you can also try the Peco N scale fences, they are only a little smaller than TT and generally look good in situ.  Search for pictures of the Peco TT demo layout to see how it looks, most of the scenery on that is from their N scale range.

More likely that job will be filled by a slightly smaller simpler boxier 0-4-0 diesel

I’m wondering if one of the upcoming 0-6-0s might be a more likely candidate in the short term?  Assuming those can be slightly more cost effective compared to the Class 08.  If we assume the outside frame plus the sheer number of pieces and details on the 08 is where the manufacturing cost comes from?

A pannier tank or even the J50 might be simpler in construction.  Certainly we all know a small goods set would be perfect as a starter for shunting planks or other micro layouts, and Hornby know how to make those types of set a success.

  10. It was a really good interview, really enjoyed it, and great to see how open and honest they were being.  Definitely a good thing, and really helpful for us TT fans.

I’m looking forward to getting my Class 50 soon (next month?).  I see the store pictures have been updated to show actual TT models now?  Can’t wait.

Not much "testing" then!  The big difference between TT120 and 00 is that TT120 is closer to scale and the clearances are less.

I'm going to wait before buying any 57' carriages.

Presumably they're frantically "fettling" them in China before shipping them.  Or perhaps Hornby are blissfully unaware?  I wonder how/if they fixed the Mk1s?

I just watched the TT video interview with Hornby talking to Peachy, it explains the issue pretty well.  Basically very tight tolerances and the production version of the coach showed an issue that wasn’t present in the test shots.  The plastic frames are slightly ‘swollen’ compared to the testing versions so the wheels catch a bit.  I’ve fixed mine (it’s a quick and easy fix) but Hornby are also adjusting the moulds for future releases so the LMS version so it’s been delayed by a few months.

A thought had today was regarding the wheels. Proportionally the flanges on TT:120 are deeper than on OO; if the designer used references to a OO model this is something that could have not at first been obvious. The wheel diameter on the 50’ is noticeably bigger than the later BR designed rolling stock. As Garry has shown, a little trim of the chassis clears the problem.

Yes this is almost certainly what happened.  The wrong wheel profile during the design/testing phase.

  13. Finally received my first full brake, as expected it was very tight in corners.  I’ve got the R3 track from the sets.  I opted to try simply cutting the ‘bar’ off that runs across under the bogies.  Worked well, although doing that means the under frame brace needs to be glued in place.  I might try the dremel on my next one.

There's so many possibilities, just hope Hornby will release at least 3 variants per production run.

I think there are two confirmed for the first release (which is fewer than for the other diesels announced so far) so hopefully more 37’s will be confirmed closer to release.  I love the split headcode version but a mix of types and liveries at launch would be fantastic.

Im hoping for some early blue centre headcode and matching blue grey MK1s.

  15. I love the split headcode, it’s always been my favourite version of this loco.  I’d also like an early BR Blue version, and a Scotrail.  There are so many to choose from I daresay Hornby will get plenty of mileage out of this tooling. 🙂

The containers are a work of art in their own right, rated as the best available. Perhaps a range of well know UK brands would appealing, Tesco, Stobart etc. Arnold have done wagon packs in the past too. I hope we see more of the cross compatibility with TT:120

A diecast Oxford container lorry carrying one of those Arnold containers would be another way to do it too, I’m sure there would be potential for sales to non-railway enthusiasts and it would give us a way to add infrastructure to our unloading scenes.

They don’t seem to. Crafty …. people… not sure that’s made clear. Like I say though, I intend to cancel as I just don’t read it enough. I subscribe(d) to Rail magazine on my iPad too and don’t really read that much any more either. Becoming more of a FOMO issue I think!

Try Readly instead.  It’s a much cheaper subscription and it includes several railway and model railway magazines.

  18. These look great.  I’ve got a couple of BR ones on order.  I might pick up some extras to repaint into newspaper vans (these are the right coaches for that BR blue livery?)

Please be aware that the digital subscription version of Hornby Magazine does not include the catalogue. You’ll have to wait for Hornby to upload the PDF to their website.

I actually intended to cancel my subscription but messed up. I prefer it to the other two main railway model magazines but still find I don’t read much of it. I might revert to buying individual issues if they have articles etc that interest me.

You can find it on the key model world website if you subscribe that way?  https://www.keymodelworld.com/article/hornby-tt120-catalogue-2024
