  1. I don't think mine will ever get to that size (I'm struggling on where to put a 6x4 layout) but it's just doable. but I'm going to need 2 so it so I can split it to break down when needed, but I'm pretty sure the locos ive bought can be converted to dcc (according to hattons) so far, I've bought 3 0-4-0 locos, R3496, R3867 & R3593 off eBay, still to source a baseboard but looking at Grainge & Hodder for that, then any future loco's I'll make sure they are dcc compatible.
  2. thanks for the info I was looking at 2 maybe 3 ovals with sidings, I'm good with a soldering iron so fitting dcc modules shouldn't be an issue if I go down that route.
  3. thanks atom, the 'vintage' wagons are I would say 60's (there was some 3 rail track at the same auction) looking at the majority of die cast wagons (I also have a crane) these have the axles sitting in metal tabs through the bodies, but all except 1 seem to have been changed to plastic wheels, but not sure when these would have been changed so may or may not be compatible with modern rail. but I will say they are noisy so would prefer to get metal wheels in that are compatible. I'll do some research on fitting pinpoint axles. thanks for the info.
  4. hi everyone first post here, I'm just looking to get into modelling a railway layout in 00. I've bought some 'vintage' wagons & carriages from my local auction house, which I'm hoping I can use. these have the old type Hornby couplings, some plastic, some metal and the wagons themselves again some are plastic and some die cast. most of my purchased wagons have plastic wheels, is there a way to upgrade these to metal wheels? I'm going to be using modern track and have seen some posts saying older wagons need the wheel mod? I'm also looking to remove the mixed metal/plastic couplers to replace with NEM mounts, I've ordered some mounts with should fit, and the 'mid' couplers from Hornby. any wagons I don't modify I also have the Hornby/triang adaptor wagon (2 different couplings) please bear with me as I'm totally brand new to this, but it's something I've wanted to do for a long time. so far I have ordered 3x 0-4-0 locos off eBay, nem adaptor mounts, modern 'mid' couplers, 2nd & 3rd radius loops plus points etc, 4 carriages (yet to decide on loco for these) I may also buy a 1st radius loop for the 0-4-0 & wagon combinations. I still need to source a controller not sure if to go dcc or analogue, plus I need to service/modify all the rolling stock I purchased so a long way to go, but any tips greatly received.
