BATTLEFRONT

Oh, thought that white star meant it was American.

Understandable because in Normandy and after the British tended not to put stars on the sides or front of tanks though there were some exceptions.  Thus most photos of British tanks taken from ground level do not show any stars.  Some sources say this was because the star served as an aiming mark for enemy gunners.  While the Luftwaffe was not much of a threat.

Stars with or without the outer circle were often but not always painted on the top of vehicles as an air recognition device.  The circle could be solid or broken.

Trucks quite often carried stars on the cab doors or on the sides of the load deck or box body and also on the cab roof.  Again some stars, especially those on the top, would have the broken or complete circle surrounding the star.
