Welcome, Ike. I don't have any live steam myself, my pockets aren't deep enough!

I strongly suggest that you read through all the other posts in this section, and treat yourself to a 'rolling road', so you can learn how to operate your loco without crashing it.

There is also a specialist group mentioned many times, where you can get more/better advice, and more importantly - spare parts, as Hornby no longer supports these loco's!

Hi yes you can run out doors but need to make sure all is level and that you put a bus wire in place to feed all the track I've run mine in the garden with no problems Just make sure yourtrack is cleaned we'll before you run it.to protect your rails make a cover with ply and felt to put over it when not using to help but when you take off sweeprails and clean before you run.hope this helps

Welcome to Hornby Live Steam ikebaddog. Get past the first 30 minutes (when most gave up) and expect to get addicted.

The above advice is all spot on:-

Start with a rolling road (you can create a cheap one with the power track - put the tender on it, prop up the front of the loco, let the driving wheels dangle)

Join the OO Live Steam Club (it's free) and print off the "Instruction Book Errata Sheet" and amend the Hornby instructions accordingly. Anyone following the Hornby instructions will almost certainly crash their loco, lose confidence and blame the system or assume it's faulty. The Club and its roadshow will be at 3 big shows coming up, Weymouth October 20/21, Warley (NEC) Nov 24/25 and Peterborough Dec 8/9. Bring your loco along to test and run it.

Hornby Live Steam is great outdoors where you wont be hampered by tight curves and you'll have the space to take account of the realistically slow reactions to commands but, yes, avoid gradients and build in a substatial under-track power bus.

The OO Live Steam Club has long intended to develop a modular system that can be put together for periods outdoors. I personally have been working on this and am just about to show prototypes that use hidden screw thread adjusters (actually kitchen cabinet feet) to help get the track sections level or actually to introduce gradients for a more challenging circuit. I am just starting my own garden railway using this system and Peco code 100 track.

Watch this space!
