AndyThomas
Hi there. Does anyone know which chassis is underneath the James body? I.E. If I aqquired a good James Body which hornby chassis would fit it and which tender would I need? Many thanks
96RAF
Pull the service sheet. I do believe it is identified as James. There are two sheets, both tender drive, one ringfield motor type and the other a modern motor unit
Going Spare
The easy part of your question to answer is that James was paired with a Schools class motorised tender. The James loco chassis was a one-off and it may be worth noting that the China-made body was secured to the chassis by a vertical screw at the front (service sheet 282) whereas the Margate-made original used a side-fixing screw just below the boiler (for which a service sheet was never issued), Co-incidentally, Hornby also used the R852 product number for one version of the Ivatt 2-6-0 but the chassis were not the same (service sheet 85A). , . 96RAF
SS423 also shows the bottom fixing screw. This one is DCC Ready with a socket in the tender.
AndyThomas
@Going SpareMany thanks for that. My idea of doing a cheap James is obviously not going to work if it was made on a bespoke chassis. I thought that Hornby may have utilised another loco chassis for it. The son of Triangman
Another alternative is to use a chassis from a smoke fitted Tri-ang R 251S 3F tender loco. The Hornby James body mould started life as the famous Tri-ang "Midlander" 3F tender loco. Hornby modified the body and married it with a schools class ringfield motored tender to make James for the Thomas range. It is possible with some work and the use of a suitable 8ba tap and suitable drill bit, a few screws to make old Tri-ang chassis fit. A syncrosmoke fitted R.251 will provide a nice smoke effect for James.
Going Spare
A nice idea, but anyone contemplating using the Tri-ang 3F chassis should keep in mind that negotiating modern points may be problematic with its coarse wheels, the X04 motor and synchrosmoke unit would overwhelm a modern controller and some means would need to be found to secure the James tender body to the 3F tender chassis.
