Harrier GR1(G)

HS Harrier GR1(G). When the Harriers predecessor, the P1127 was being tested at RAF West Raynham. The participating countries of the tripartite Squadron were Britain, USA and Germany. All had expressed an interest in procuring the aircraft to be known as the Harrier. In the even though only Britain and the USA  took the aircraft with Germany pulling out of the programme. If you think back the sordid Lockheed corruption around Gemany's purchase of the Starfighter (rather than Lightnings) and our own Govt telling the Germans they really didn't want Buccaneers there's a potential for a whole fleet of Brit-Built Luftwaffe. Nice model and great idea!

According to Wiki:

In 1964 a tripartite squadron, comprising members of the British, American and German armed forces, was formed at West Raynham to evaluate the Hawker P.1127 Vertical Take-Off and Landing (VTOL) strike fighter aircraft.[6]

 

I think this model is a "what if the Germans had continued with the program and bought GR1s". The P1127 is quite different from a GR1.

Interesting 'what if' project. Eric Brown's memoir mentions the West German F104 deal (he was the British Air Attache in Bonn at the time). He had persuaded his friends in the Marineflieger that the Buccaneer would be a good choice but the West German Defence Ministry wanted to buy a single model for the Luftwaffe Interceptor Squadrons and Marineflieger and plumped for the F104 (a dodgy choice for the maritime strike role).

Lockheed did throw in 'sweeteners' for the deal, including local manufacture. European Air Forces bought more F104s that the USAF and kept them a lot longer. They did have a reputation as death traps. On the UK side the Chielf of the Defence Staff (Louis Mountbatten) was very keen for people to buy Buccaneers while the RAF and Air Ministry wanted to kill it so they wouldn't have it forced on them once TSR2 and F-111 were cancelled.

There was a bad joke in Germany which translates roughly as "whats the cheapest way to get a starfighter? buy an acre of land and one will crash on it soon enough". The bribes even took down a pretty senior member of the dutch royal family.

$1.1M in cash in the early 70s was quite a bung.

Like you say not a bad point defence interceptor (although its telling how little use even the USAF put the F104 to) but damned lethal at low altitude. I think it had a downward ejector seat! One engine too and personally I'd like two over water at low level.

I am sadly to late, but I had the same Idea to build a German Luftwaffen Harrier Gr. 1.

Because I would not "capture" an other thraed, I open my own one.

Here is the result.

Not sure you can covert GR I to a P1127.  Too many differences.  P1127 cadidate for Classic range?  I don't recall any flaws.

RAF West Raynham.  Really?

As I recall, the ancient that I am, Airfix did release a P1127 in the old plastic bag kits prior to the Harrier. Cost 1 shilling and sixpence 7.5 pence after decimalization. Ah if only I had the money back then.
