T-34 Tank

Hey

Just a quick question. I got me a Airfix T-34 Tank 01316 It says Series 1 1:72 is this the exact same as the new boxed version. T-34/85 Medium tank A01316 1:76 ?.

Because I was under the impression I was buying the newer version. But if the version I got is the same I have no problems with my seller.

I am trying to keep my tanks in 1:76 scale and I also wanted to build the T-34/76 variant is that true with version I have?

Thanks

I don't like to sound flippant but is the difference between 1/72 and 1/76 really all that significant, especially since there seems to be slight errors in measurements in most kits. I used to be in the Army with blokes from 5' 4" to 6' 6" so the difference in scale certainly doesn't matter for figures. I think in general if you see a vehicle kit that Airfix was producing years ago the chances are it's still from the same mould. There are many references available on-line or in print that will soon flag up any new tool kits. Personally I'm glad that Airfix are still churning out some of the classics, often they are the only models available of the subject in small scale.

Well, it depends on...

  • The size of the vehicle. By volume, a true to scale 1/72 kit is nearly 18% bigger than a 1/76 one, and the bigger the vehicle, the more obvious the difference. A Jeep or Sdkfz 250 even, is not that noticable, but a Panther is massively bigger, a King Tiger even more so.
  • How you are going to view them. If you display models individually, the difference is irrelevant. If you build diorama or wargame with them, well, maybe it does matter.
  • The eye of the beholder. I personally can look and anything bigger than a Jeep and tell (if it is true to scale) if it is 1/72 or 1/76, just because I have been building and viewing 1/76 kits for so long. But it is also a question of whether it bothers you. Some people (me) it does, but many don't care.
  • If similar vehicles are being viewed together. To my eye, it looks wrong to have a 1/72 M10 Tank Destroyer next to a 1/76 Sherman. Worse, I had a 1/72 Hummel that looked massive, not just compared to 1/76 Panzer IV, but even against 1/76 Panthers... (it is now happily replaced with a much better Milicast one in 1/76).
  • The actual scale of the kit. I have 1/72 Revel Jagdpanther in my stash, but only because it scales out closer to 1/76...

Figures are a whole different story, with little agreement, even within 1/72, on how big they should be. Some manufacturers are notoriously, and very obviously over scale and look very odd next to other makes.

Is the "1/72 Revell Jagdpanther" not actually from the old Matchbox tool? If it is, then it was originally released as being 1/76 scale.

Ah, no... Revell are/were pretty good at marking their ex-Matchbox kits as 1/76 - except where they issued them as sets with a box of 1/72 figures. Their new tool 1/72 Jagdpanther is actually about 1/75.
