Hornby TTS Sound 'King' Class - Short Circuit Issue

Hello all!

Recently, I have been having issues with my Hornby 'King' Class (R3370TTS), mainly it shorting the Hornby SELECT controller whemn placed on the track.

I have been having issues with this engine since it was purchased, and it has been sent back to Hornby once for fixing. This fix made the engine work for a short time, but when left running for 10 to 15 minutes without a stop, it was creating a short circuit. None of my other DCC/TTS sound engines do this. The short circuit was shown on the controller by the start-up numbers not showing properly, mainly no. 15.

I am posting this because I have not heard of many other people with this issue, and none pof my other engines do this. I am not sure if it is the controller, engine or my track layout. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

His OL symptoms of fading numbers suggest he is using a 1 amp PSU, the numbers fading as the PSU voltage drops. It could be a simple case of too many locos on track.

I suggest removing all locos and running them one at a time to confirm there is a real problem with any particular unit.

Taking up what Rob has said above. How many locos are sitting on the track in total. Then do they sit there with lights and or engine sounds on. If so, they will all be drawing current from the Select. It may be that this new recent purchase is just one loco too many for your Select power supply (assuming it is the 1 amp supply and not the 4 amp one - please confirm current rating of supply). As Rob suggests, take them ALL off the track and just test one at a time, to see if the suspect loco (or any of the others) still gives you a detectable issue.

A short circuit would show up as OL.

From the vague descripton, you have a slack power plug! Check it is plugged in properly!

This could also apply to your Mallard post.

Thank you very much for your input. I have taken the engine to my nearest specialist, who has removed the sound chip to see if that is in fact the issue. I checked all of the plugs and they all work. I think the issue may be because the controller is now fairly out-of-date.

Thanks once again!                 -Peter'sTrains

Thank you very much for your idea. I tested all of the engines, and they all work. I think that the issue is that the controller is out-of-date and I need to upgrade.

My nearest specialist has also helped by removing the sound chip and testing it that way to see if that is the problem.

Select out of date?  You imply in your original post the first number displayed on startup is 15 which means latest revision.  Even if not, running a loco isn’t affected by any later revision, latest 1.5 is just about controlling all the functions on a TTS.  The unfortunate thing with Select at any revision is you can’t change to the other running algorithm which has been shown on many occasions to improve things at low speed.

You could ask your dealer to do that change for you.

If I had a magic wand to make it happen would that make you get your Select out of the drawer.

@ Peters Trains

With all due respect your specialist is talking codswallop about the Select being out of date.

I have tried this, and it has not revealed anything. I am not sure of the power supply, but I know it was the one from the 'Mixed Freight' DCC Set. Thank you for your response.

I appeciate your ideas. However, I have not changed anything with my contoller apart from it being updated. I do not know what you mean about the 'algorithm' as this has not been an issue. I heard that the SELECT was out-of-date from somewhere else on the internet. Thanks.

P.S. Thank you for the information about slow-running and algorithms, but I am not having issues with this.

My specialist has not said that the controller was out of date; I found this information on the internet.

Apologies, for casting doubt upon your specialist, I had picked up on someone else's wrong assumption.

Power supplies, the 1-amp supply is a wall wart, the type you would charge a phone or similar with, the 4-amp supply is a brick similar to a laptop supply. The output is labelled on both types.

i am sure it is within the realms of possibility that the select could be upgraded to the same functionality as the elite but with a single control knob, the screen from the elite could be used as can the electronics inside just reduced to compensate for one less control knob,

.

Actually, in a way it is possible it has indeed revealed something. If nothing negative has been revealed, then that infers that when run individually on the track that you have no issues with any of your locos. That in turn infers that your issue is too many locos for the basic 1 amp power supply to handle.
