Hornby Railroad 'Mallard' DCC Issues

Hello all!

A few months ago, I fitted my Hornby A4 'Mallard' (R3371) with the Hornby A4 TTS Sound Decoder (R8107). The engine worked fine for a while, but now has some issues. The main issue is the engine stopping at random places along the layout, which none of my other engines do, and the sounds, like the chuffing noise, not playing correctly and at the right times. The decoder was fitted in the engine, not the tender, as this was easier, but has meant that there is not a lot of space for the speaker (I am not sure if this conributes to the issues). The speaker makes the sound of the engine resting, and when the engine begins to move, does not start to play any chuffing sounds, and continues to p[lay the resting sound. However, the whistle sounds (and I presume all of the other sounds as well) work. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!         -Peter'sTrains

Have you tried re-setting the decoder by writing 8 to CV8.........this will reset all CVs back to factory default so it is wise to have a note of those that you've already changed.........HB

I haven't changed any of the CV values before, and I'm not sure how to do this. If this would help, please may you advise me on how to do it with my SELECT controller? Thank you!

or any other more capable DCC controller brand / model.

.

The Select is currently very limited in terms of what it can do with CVs.

.

What firmware revision is shown on the Select screen when you power it up?

.

The firmware revision is the first number in the sequence nn followed by 30 followed by 03, where nn = the revision level i.e 11 = revision 1.1 through to 15 = revision 1.5

.

For best compatibility with TTS decoders you ideally need revision 1.5

.

Talk to Hornby Customer Services regarding your firmware upgrade options for the Select if it is less than 1.5

I fitted TTS into two A4. At first all was Ok but on one of them the sound whilst moving was very badly distorted and almost inaudible. At rest it was still ok. It turned out to be the speaker was shot. I was sent a replacement by Hornby immediately. It cured the problem. However I fitted sugarcube instead. May be worth a try sub the speaker's.

Unfortunately the Select controller is not capable of resetting a decoder.......you would have to get someone with an Elite or RailMaster/Elink system to help.........HB

Apart from my nearest specialist, there is no-one that I know that has an Elite controller. Anyway, my specialist has removed the sound chip from the King and has told me to run it without the sounds to see if the TTS decoder is the problem. Thanks.
