Best Lightboard To Put Scalextric On?

Hi Marty73 - welcome to the forum!

Putting a track on a board / table certainly makes it easier to use and is also good for caring for the track and cars - there's less dirt and dust than on the floor. The simplest solution is to use a hollow plywood internal door. It will make a relatively small Scalextric table, but no construction is required. All you need to do it to put it on a couple of cheap saw horses. A more expensive option without any woodworking is to use a table tennis (ping-pong) table - you get a fabulous space for a Scalextric layout and it all folds away when not in use. There are also smaller junior ping-pong tables if a full-size table is too big.

If you fancy a relatively easy DIY woodworking proect, I would suggest looking at some model railway 'baseboard' building techniques. Probably the most lightweight technique is to use a 3mm hardboard (eg Masonite) sheet as the top layer on a frame made from softwood battens running along and across. A model railway needs a more rigid frame than a Scalextric track, so you can get away with using 2-inch x 1-inch (50 x 25mm) battens.

That should give you a maximum 8 x 4-foot (2440 x 1220mm) board that can be moved easily by a couple of people and leaned against a wall when not in use. Permanently attaching track & accessories to the board is possible, but makes it a lot heavier and less easy to store. When you are ready to race, you could rest the board on a big dining table, or make detachable legs or use some saw-horses.

I hope that gives you some ideas!

It also depends on how much space you have available..

If he is disabled he likely needs to get a wheelchair around the edges or at least more space for a walker or crutches...

Also you don't want the track too far from the esge in order to get at cars that have gone off in the infield.
