Tender drive

It would have helped if you had stated more information about what loco you want to convert. For example Rnnnn stock code number or Loco Class etc.

.

Here is an example showing the conversion of a Flying Scotsman Tender Drive with a 'Ringfield' motor. Note that some 'Ringfield' motors can need special consideration to ensure total electrical isolation from the pickups and tender chassis. So do not assume that your particular loco has the same wiring method as shown in the linked articles below. Hence why knowing the Rnnnn number would have been helpful.

.

Here is the same conversion in a YouTube video that should compliment the text version above.

.

Just to clarify some comments made in the YouTube video. The orange disk the video narrator called a "transistor" is not a transistor. It is a 0.1uF suppression capacitor and can be removed. The suppression function is duplicated in the decoder.

.

The orange and grey wires from the decoder go to the motor.

The red and black wires of the decoder go to the wheel pickups.

.

The video narrator incorrectly said that the orange and grey wires were function wires. It is the blue, white, yellow, green & purple wires that are the function wires.

Hence why you should only believe what you see on utube if you know it is true or not which kind of defeats the original object of the exercise.

I treat all utube videos as suspect unless I know it is accurate. Utube is like Wiki - only someones view of something, not necessarily accurate.
