Mark66
Hi,Note: New to Model RailwaysHow do I couple up a Castle class locomotive to its tender? I have what I think is called a drawbar sticking out of the loco but not sure how it attaches to the tender. It’s a C shape. There is also a screw under the tender.Help please....Thanks Mark
atom3624
Be careful with the metal same-shaped contact to the plastic drawbar - see where it makes contact to the tender, line up, and simply push together. In doubt? Check out some YT videos - bound to be a few, but once figured out, it's very simple. Al.
Lyd 85B
What is the Hornby product number (beginning with 'R')? If you don't know, what is the name of the 'Castle'?
Mark66
It’s a ”Winsor Castle” loco, which comes with the “GWR Western Pullman Digital Set. R1077
Chrissaf
At a guess I would imagine that the C shaped bar clips firmly onto the vertical pole on the tender. It may be that the vertical pole has broken off, or the C bar is worn or the vertical pole is worn or both are worn, such that the C clip doesn't stay attached under tension load../media/tinymce_upload/78eb20befbe65c73191facbf14ea212a.jpg.PS - This is only a guess based on the drawing as I have not personally seen this type of coupling before. The drawing may help other's to recognise this coupling type and provide a more accurate reply..TIP: As this is your very first question, just be aware that the 'Blue Button with the White Arrow' is not a 'Reply to this post' button. SRmike
I have a loco with this type of tender coupling. It is R3071 Nunney Castle. I was worried about this and so it stays connected and is either in a display cabinet or plastic box for transporting to run on my club layout
96RAF
If that was my loco I would be dismantling the tender until I could locate a complete closed link on the tender post and if needed in future disconnect at the loco screw making sure to keep tabs on that spring. Having such a snap on connection is against all my engineering principles. It doesn’t look as if there is any need to transfer power across tht link. Nice bit of picture fettling Chris, to bring all the bits closer for illustrative purposes.
walkingthedog
I've always found the connection to be very sound but once connected I rarely disconnect it.
atom3624
As WTD, I had a few of these 'earlier type' Castles, and the connection was fine. As I said right at the beginning, just be very careful with the metal contact - a clumsy approach can fold it over as I found with one I had received. Al. Mark66
Thanks All!It was a simple case of a bit more force for the clip to attach to the Tender. I was being over cautious trying not to break it!Thanks again.

walkingthedog
I always thought the system worked very well although once connected it was best to leave it that way.
