Steamdream
Hi all. Is there a list of decoders that will fit each loco? I realise that there are many manufacturers. I have a Hornby Stanier tank would like to know what decoder will fit in that tiny space. Thank you
Lyd 85B
Although I don't have any experience of the Hornby Stanier 2-6-4T, so don't know what the body is like internally, I've used TCS MC-2 or Digitrax DN136D in several small tanks where space is tight, but I've usually been able to fit standard decoders in the smokebox of larger tank engines. Maybe that's not an option on this model, though.
96RAF
There is no such list. The only clue you have is that Bachmann label their boxes with the decoder type, e.g. 8 or 21 pin. Hornby are generally 8 pin apart from the odd few smaller locos that need 4 or 6 pin decoders. In your case there are a couple of manufacturers that produce very small decoders such as TCS and Zimo. Maybe a direct plug decoder rather than one with a harness would be more suitable. If so the socket may have to be turned through 90 degrees. If your loco is the one shown on SS312 then there may be room above the trailing bogie (circled in red below) for a standard harnessed decoder. /media/tinymce_upload/a1cd803eea87cf7557b4f38646606c00.png
Steamdream
Thank you both for you help. I have had a problem fitting decoders to tank locos. I will take the advice about smaller decoders and try those. How anyone fits a sound decoder and speaker into a 14xx or jinty I don't know! Sultan
A TCS DPU2X-UK will fit straight into the 8 pin socket and is designed to fit in UK steam locos.https://tcsdcc.com/1287You can get them from several UK suppliers including Coastall DCC https://www.coastaldcc.co.uk/products/tcs/dp2x-uk-2-function-direct-plug-in-for-steamCheck the dimensions first or ask the person you are ordering from.Good luck :)
96RAF
My Bachmann Jinty has TTS leads extended to a sugar cube speaker on the cab floor with 2 x half crew stood on top.
Steamdream
Thank you both for your help. A decoder such as the Bachmann one that I fitted to my Bachmann jinty where you just plug and play, no harness would be great. I am new to dcc and I am on a sharp learning curve. Having poor eyesight doesn't help. I was going to send each loco away to fit decoders, but decided to ask the hornby forum first. I am glad that I did.Thank you all! morairamike
I used a Laisdcc decoder in Wickham trolley which many say can not be fitted with a decoder, well they are WRONG. I fitted it ontop of the motor and cut a small hole in the gravel load in the trailer to accommodate it and disguised it as a cement sack. It is very small about the size of a 1p coin.Sorry I can't convert links to active links. Just search in google for smsllest dcc decoder.https://m.ebay.co.uk/itm/Laisdcc-motor-4-Function-DCC-Decoder-with-trailing-NEM-652-plug-UK-Stock/192696880266?ul_ref=https://rover.ebay.com/rover/1/710-53481-19255-0/1?ff3=2&pub=5575376664&toolid=10001&campid=5338268676&customid=Cj0KCQiArdLvBRCrARIsAGhB_szIem1HvcbMqt3fBld50qghIuyZiYwBJ3fvW0PJxKjfZQaE74DkEn4aAk_wEALw_wcB&lgeo=1&item=192696880266&srcrot=710-53481-19255-0&rvr_id=2221849956588&rvr_ts=0620755016f0aa4664c15bd4fff90541&_mwBanner=1&_rdt=1&ul_noapp=true&pageci=007c9925-b2ff-4ee4-b077-9c475a726e1e&epid=1162507678

Steamdream
Thank you all for the help and advice. It is a pity that there isn't a definitive guide for decoders for each locomotive and how and where to fit them. There is so little space in some locos such as my terrier that I may sell him on ebay and buy a dcc fitted from my local shop.
