Hornby select.

No.  Never leave it unattended while it is powered up.  There is always the very slight chance that a fault could develop on any electrical equipment (eg tumble driers and washing machines!) that could be disastrous.

The decoders should not need to be reprogrammed when power is disconnected.

If when you say:

.

When I turn it off at the mains I have to reprogramme all the loco's again....

.

You mean that you cannot repeatedly press the 'Select' button to call up a previously used loco from the Select internal memory until you have selected that particular loco's DCC address again. This is not the same as 're-programming the locos', which is a term used when changing CV functions on the loco decoder. Hence, Roger's last sentence comment, where he has taken what you have written quite literally.

.

Then NO, you cannot permanently lock (store) the loco DCC address into the Select memory. This memory is 'dynamic' and designed to function in the way it does. You are trying to use it as a feature that it was not designed for, nor its operational intended use.

.

This is a question that has been asked before regarding the correct use of Hornby DCC controller memory. The Hornby Elite memory operates in the same dynamic manner too.

.

To sdd to what Chris has said. The locos have not lost their address, it is held firmly in the decoder, so as soon as you ask the Select to run loco X then it will, without any need for ‘reprogramming’.

What the Select and many other controllers conveniently do is remeber which locos have run in a session and keep them in a recall list for you.
