dlaloum
Hi,I have a hornby/airfix fowler 4f... Tender drive, with tyres... pickups on loco.Has anyone replaced the wheels with non-tyres versions ? Yes I know I would sacrifice traction...
atom3624
It would be interesting to hear from others. I have a high detail Schools, which is loco drive, and replaced the 2 drivers which have tyres with 'normal wheels'.Agreed it is only 4 driven wheels, not 6 as on the tender, but I found weight distribution - onto bogie, connection with tender - to be so critical, it could now realistically (some slip) pull 7 coaches, or barely pull itself. I'm sure it's possible, but the losses may vastly outweigh the gains built-in by the original design. FYI - I returned the Schools to the 2 wheels with tyres. I suppose I could try one with a tyre, but then ... The idea with the loco-driven locomotive was to permit a little wheel slip. It doesn't matter with the tender, so I would say it's not really worth the consideration.Your call of course. Al.
Going Spare
Do suitable wheels exist? - i.e. flanged, with drive gears on the back, but without grooves for the tyres.GS
walkingthedog
Ultrascale probably make a set that would fit but it is an expensive thing to do. https://www.ultrascale.uk/eshop/products/CAT007#HDCP
The Doc
The tender of this model is very light with little room for extra added weight, so I don't think it would be worth trying to replace the plastic wheels/traction tryres with metal ones. It would probably barely push the loco along, let alone some wagons or coaches.
