GCRfan
hi! I'm a real newbie to this hobby, and I was wondering can hornby DCC decoders simply be fitted into any other make of loco if they are DCC ready?I currently have the select controller, and four hornby DCC fitted locos but as I expand this fleet I will doubtless be picking up locos from other makers ranges that fit into my chosen era.thanks in advance, phil. poliss
Yes they can. There are two types of sockets that locos use. 8 pin and 21 pin. Make sure you use the correct decoders for the sockets.
GCRfan
thanks poliss, thats good to know.however, your reply leads me to another question! all of my locos are 8 pin sockets,so what does a 21 pin socket and decoder do?thanks, Phil. poliss
21 pin decoders can do more things. Compare the Hornby R8249 and R8250 Sapphire decoders here.https://www.hornby.com/downloads/digital-instruction-manuals/
The son of Triangman
You don't even need the sockets, I've just hardwired Hornby decoders into B-team Lord Nelson split chassis locos.
Fishmanoz
And it is possible to get 21-9 pin converters too for those who don't like the idea of soldering.
