Has anyone built the family fun project layout?

Hello

I wondered if anyone has built the family fun project layout and if yes did you follow the video guides?

I only ask as they do not follow normal ballasting rules and also do not have proper baseboard construction. So I wondered if building the layout that way actually worked with no problems.

I wouldn't say there are any ballasting or baseboard rules. There are ideal  ways of doing things but if you are happy with your way that's fine.  Surely the idea is for a family to have fun together making a simple layout.

Hornby probably didn't want to scare off parents from buying this product by making it too complicated from a DIY woodworking skill set point of view. As WTD says above, it is aimed at the kids with a little bit of parent input as the product name suggests.

There's absolutely nothing wrong with the ballasting or their baseboard. We cannot mix professional methods with a family fun DIY project centred around kids. It's like giving kids a black and white drawing and asking them to paint it professionally.

What an excellent idea get the kids to professionally paint a black and white drawing, we would get more flair and imagination out of the Kids than the professional painters.

Who have had it all knocked out of them by rules and conventions.

There are some jobs in our hobby newbie or seasoned hobbyist that have to be done once and done right.

Which makes base boards, bench-work electrical and ballasting a problem there is only a few ways they can be done properly so they do the job they are supposed to and last

I was just interested really, as being new the 'project details' seemed a much easier method for a newbie.

I shall stick to doing things the way suggested here.
