Could someone tell me why Hornby have discontinued the Sapphire decoder?

Probably because it didn’t sell as well as expected. Only one production run was made apparently so any that are left are old stock on retailers shelves. At the time it was introduced it was expensive compared to say an equivalent Lenz silver or gold. It is normal commercial practice that if a product sticks then it is binned. A pity because it was a well spec’d and versatile decoder in its day.
