Fitting a TTS decoder

Fowler 2-6-4T;

Just purchased my first DCC ready loco, and an R7239 TTS decoder to install. (The R7239 -J36 was the closest I could see to the likely sounds of the Fowler tank).

The chip seems to be happy on its end adjacent to the main cylindrical area, but the speaker (being some 25mm in diameter) can only really sit over the trailing bogey (pony truck?). Sadly there appears to be insufficient space even here and there's nowhere else I can see to shoehorn it into the body shell.

If anyone has managed to achieve installing the speaker in the body shell could they share their expertise?

If not, and  presumably if this is a frequent issue with the similarly small locos, is the only option to purchase a replacement (perhaps sugar cube?) speaker, (and a magnifying glass??) and practise my soldering skills in order to achieve TTS?

Many thanks for any constructive advice.

Even with the J36, I had to fit a sugar cube speaker as although the round speaker suppiled does sort of fit I found the top plate didn't sit right. I would go with the sugar cube speaker it is better sound and easier to position. Be careful though on some sugar cube speakers there are are spring connections that need insulating, they are the sort of thing that move as as you put the body on and short out the decoder. Does the J36 sound like a Fowler? It is just that sounds a good idea for my Fowlers.

Thanks for your reply, I shall make the purchase. Sadly after posting yesterday I must have got carried away, running the loco with the NCE power cab. In attempting to locate the "chuff function" F17 I must have done something really stupid, change some CV settings, and now my P/c won't read the decoder at all. I tried the CV2, then entered the number 8. it prompts me for a value but then when I enter 8 it just reverts to asking me for a number, rather than reading the Hornby code 48 which would allow me to reset it.

All of which is to say, that so far the sounds are Ok, whether they are accurate I am not expert enough to say, but the decoder seemed like the nearest match of those available. As regards the quality of sound one or two (coal shovelling) sound a bit "tinny" but I have no point for comparison, and as I said, being my first foray into DCC, it's so much more exciting than analogue that I am not past the first wave of excitement!  (Except now that it has stopped working!).

Steep learning curve, but thanks for your advice.

TTS

F1 is sound on/off, F17 is chuff or coast (manual as opposed to letting it do it itself based on BEMF).

CV2 is kick start voltage.

CV8 is where you reset a TTS decoder by writing value 8 for a full reset or value 5 for a sound only reset.

All this is of course in the famous manual that comes with every TTS decoder whether retro kit or factory fit.

@Froxtrot...........CV2 does not exist on a TTS decoder.........if you want to reset the decoder go to CV8 and enter a value of 8...........The chuff function is on/off via F1.........F17 is only used to toggle between Chuffing and Coasting..........all this info is detailed on the Sound Decoder Manual..........HB

Rob just beat me to it 😆

  • 2 weeks later...

Thanks for all replies; a week has gone by and much learned: maybe the most useful lesson was to make notes especially if one is attempting the smallest reset to a decoder function.  Once again thanks for sharing knowledge and expertise.
