jopres57
I’ve spent the last few months doing some enjoyable builds of old kits, some with aftermarket decals. All are Airfix apart from a Frog Supermarine S6B which is very similar to its Airfix equivalent. I’m a little bit unsure about the colours of the Pe2 and the Mig 23, but I think the Pe2 in particular could be given a bit of leeway in shades used considering the aircrafts operating conditions. The Heinkel 111 is from the Battle of Britain set from 2010, a bit of artistic licence from Airfix since I understand that the H 20 version didn’t enter service till 1944. I used Humbrol 241 and 242 (shwartzgrun and dunkelgrun) but was a bit disappointed with the result, the two colours being so similar they almost blend into one.The Phantom has been my favourite kit for many years, these are the latest two of at least twenty that I’ve built. I tried some light aircraft grey on the VF 31 version from USS Saratoga but it looks a bit too dark. I had read on another plastic modelling forum that light aircraft grey and light gull grey are identical but obviously they aren’t. Just goes to show that it always pays to double check your references. All these kits are worth building and hopefully some will re-appear again as Vintage Classics.
jopres57
So far this year I've been having a go at some non-Airfix kits. The Super Sabre is a rather basic 'PM models' offering that I bought at a bargain price online. It seems like a 1960's mold but was apparently a new tool in 1991. I managed to liven it up a bit with some new decals by Xtradecal and Mcroscale, I also added a pilot figure and a different bomb load. The Skynight and the Ki-102a are both 'Sword' kits. The last time I built a Skynight it was the chunky 'Matchbox' version, this one was a distinct improvement. The KI-102a was a completely new aircraft to me. I understand the type never entered service so I just finished it in an imaginary night fighter scheme. Both of the Sword kits are worthwhile builds. They aren't as highly detailed as the newer Airfix models but probably good enough for most people. There are a few firms that seem to make a good business from offering fairly basic replicas of obscure aircraft or obscure versions of well known aircraft, you only have to look at the 'Wishlists' thread on this forum to see that there are a wide range of possible subjects. Could be an option for Airfix for one or two new releases every year.

Dominic Thomas
Now, the whole problem was that I was accessing the forum on the phone, and the Gallery is not available on the phone. I’ve since found it on the iPad.
