Connecting led buffers

Depending on your answer to Rob’s question, this topic should not be in this RM forum, rather the General forum if DC, or the DCC forum otherwise.

But, to answer your question, yes you can connect them directly to the track noting a couple of things;

  • given they are 12V LEDs as stated, they would seem to already include a current limiting resistor in series with the LED
  • if DC, they will only work when your controller is running a loco, then only with the loco in one direction (not both forwards and backwards)
  • if DCC, they will be on all the time, independent of running any locos

I have DIY side looking twin led buffer lights which are regular 3v with a IK ohm resistor running by direct connection to DCC rails. They have lasted decades now without failure. I suppose each led is acting as back to back protection for the other.

I also have a 12v flashing led in my brake van which is lit all the while the track is powered. Again never failed in years.

I moved your post to this section which as Fishy says is more appropriate.
