The_Seagull
hi to all......have a hornby R3073 A1 which comes with a spare flanged axle, which can be used to replace the flat wheels sited under the cab. does anyone know if the loco runs better with the flat wheels that came fitted, or should i change to the axle with flanged wheels? Fishmanoz
Flat wheels are for ease of running around curves. Flanged wheels usually only for static display.
Graskie
Yes, it's because the so-called "Cartazzi truck" under the loco cab does not have the same trailing bogie flexibility of swinging bogies. You'd have trouble especially with the flanged wheel set negotiating tight and even not so tight bends.
walkingthedog
In answer to your question seagull it makes no difference at all to how the loco runs. If you have a straight end to end layout the flanged wheels will probably be OK. If you have curves on you layout less than 4th radius the unflanged wheels are your best bet. I suggest you try the flanged versions, if the loco derails or has problems negotiating curves swap the for the other set.
The_Seagull
Morning Guys......may have misled you here....as WTD says, I accept that the flat wheels as fitted will not affect how well the loco runs.....my layout has two ovals, so was more about the ability of the "cartazzi" bogie to negotiate the curves....you all seem to agree that the best option is to leave the flat wheels in place, which is obviously easier for me.........thanks for the replies guys
The son of Triangman
Yep if you have less than 4th radius curves on the layout leave the flangeless wheels in place, they look odd going round curves mind you.
